Is the air filter not allowed to just be right there on the throttle body between the seats? Otherwise I like the idea of a 90deg turn to the passenger or driver side. Factory air box housed in that same compartment as the battery or something.

i like symmetry.  i could build a "battery box" on the drivers side that housed a stock air box that feeds from below the car.  i guess that's kinda what NO TATA was saying. for some reason, it made more sense when you said it.

but before i do that, i'm gonna finish my vision of the center air duct console.  worst case, i relocate combustion air inlet and the air duct just feeds cooling air to the engine box.

Angry,

It has been hectic at work the past few weeks and I only just saw you mention/question about the header bags...

Basically they were stainless sheet with a ram air duct piped to the front end and an exit duct out of the bodywork to the rear. The bags were flimsy and held together top/bottom with safety wire, and also bolted to the head flanges. Exhaust primaries were fully contained and the bags were close fitting to the collector.

It created a rather tidy a nd compact heat shield assembly that had dedicated primary cooling air. This was for turbo engines that ran a wee bit hotter than you r LT will, but the idea still work.

The discolored/yellowed stainless in the picture below. And a fabric version in the bottom pic.

If your duct ends up being too crowded, you could also go up, and to make it short (fore and aft) build a tb elbow and mount the TB straight up and down.

Would be symmetrical and you could pretty it up and make it a design element. Would it simplify throttle cable? Pulling down instead of back.

Have you given any thought to a cobra head style intake elbow? That might be a good way to make a tight 90° turn right off the TB since space in the doghouse is obviously going to be at a premium.

More work on engine close-outs. LH side panel:

I will cut the flanged edges from the scrap pieces and add them to the tops of the side panels, which will give a nice mating surface for the top piece.

I'd like to make the top piece from fiberglass but it wouldn't pass NHRA tech.

It could be made of paper mache and still pass NHRA tech. But it's looking really good.

stafford1500's header bag pic made me think that i can probably make an almost-free version from exhaust heat shields that are screwed to the firewalls and tunnels of every car made for the last however many years.  i'll go on a scavenging mission as soon as i finish the close-outs.

i also kinda feel like going to the appliance scrap yard to get some oven door glass.  i think the engine cover needs windows.

Last night was a staring and thinking night, so no pix to share. Today on my lunchtime walk, I passed this crate next to a "free pallets" pile and noticed the latches, which I'm going to grab if it's still there tomorrow. They'll work nicely to hold the engine box lid to the side panels.

Draw latches - very handy stuff!  I've used them for machinery and utility equipment before.

Nice work on the engine cover so far.  Way to get in the zone!

Last update was 8/20. I flew to Las Vegas on 8/21 for a few days of brake testing in Death Valley. We wrapped up a day early, so I'm posting this from my office in MI instead of from the airport in Las Vegas.

tomorrow I'm headed to Dayton OH to celebrate the life of my friend, SAE instructor, and ChumpCar teammate Tom McCready, who passed away just a couple days before our most recent SAE class.

i'll get back at the car next week.

thanks man.

CA 190 reopened on 8/19.  Some side roads were still closed.

The "industry standard" brake test uses the downhill section of 190 from Towne Pass to Stovepipe Wells.  That section did not have any damage to the pavement, but there were several places where dirt and rocks had been washed onto the road and they were still cleaning up the shoulders in those areas.  Too hot for me.  We saw daytime temps as high as 122*F.  Nighttime lows were 88-95*F.  That's just plain dumb.  At the top of the hill we chatted with some Brits who were there testing thermal management on Bentleys.  So they'd make a banzai uphill run, then park at the top and watch their temps, whereas my test is to start at the top, accelerate to a couple mph above my target speed, then bump it into neutral and drag the brakes to maintain constant speed down a 17-mile stretch that averages 5.6% grade, then observe component and fluid temps at the bottom.  People pull out to pass and ride along next to us yelling "downshift!  don't ride your brakes!" and i'm like "i get paid to ride my brakes!"

I thought the industry standard was outbraking a Porsche?

Have you hosted a brake thread yet? Or even can you?
