Well you just made me feel better about mine.
I don't know if you posted in here already or not (I didn't see it), but what is the rough distance from the axle centerline to the front of the engine crank pulley?
You can read that as: "how small a sub-compact import car can I mid-engine an inline LS?"
In reply to SkinnyG (Forum Supporter) :
Those bits of painter's tape have very important dimension notes on them. Using an Audi 01X transaxle with an adapter plate 1" thick, the distance from wheel center to front of balancer is 36-1/2". Remember, this is an LT1 (1994), not an LS.
EDIT: before the pilers-on begin doing their thing, I will point out that I was once so confident in my ability to build this car in months vs years, that I dated notes to self using only month and day.
And as long as I'm post whoring, let me say OMG I'm exhausted. I ran a couple miles this AM, and have been in the garage since about noon. It was 90-ish deg F in here for a good part of the day. I did accomplish a couple things:
first, I got those 3-barrel mechanical fuel injection throttle bodies packed up and ready to ship. I'm pretty sure I'll never build another Corvair engine, so I put them on eBay.
second, I put away a bunch of tools and threw away a bunch of trash. I got my wiring table clean all the way down to the wiring. I kinda forgot where I left off.
third, I made a list of all the interdependent tasks I have to knock out, so I can try to tackle them in the correct order. Engine wiring impacts body wiring. Location of fuse box impacts body wiring. Shape of central air duct impacts location of fuse box. Etc.
I'm calling it quits now. 8:45PM and I'm spent.
Awesome.
And I DO remember seeing that picture. Dang it. I recorded the measurements.
Thanks!!
And yeah, projects have a way of sucking years from your life.
Death wheel made quick work of a free metal bookshelf:
and the second free metal bookshelf was held together with screws and nuts, so in addition to being a sheetmetal donor it's also a source of random fastener trade bait!
I think I've got enough sheetmetal now:

Why do I get the mental image of you looking up the FMV of every nut, bolt, and washer and then self trading for a supercharger?
I finally made part of a car part!
more to come, but maybe not until tomorrow.
EDIT: couldn't wait til tomorrow.
shout out to Benchmark Abrasives for their magically good cutoff discs, recommended to me by Classic_Jackets. Soooo much better than the crap .065" discs from The Future Hammer Store. The pieces below were cut with Benchmark's .040" disc and barely dressed with a flap disc. I felt like Lonzo says in Training Day, "I'm surgical with this bitch, Jake!"
I'm getting away without a brake by harvesting 90-degree bends from the shelf edges. I'm cutting with overlap and I'll drill for rosette welds, then apply seam sealer. In its final form, I think the engine box will be removable in 5 pieces, and will be compliant with NHRA firewall rule.
Got the left side front panel cut and fit:
fired up the CAD for the MAF pass-thru:
played around a little with an air duct idea:
and the sketch became life. Not sure yet if it has any merit:
The sides of this duct, in whatever form it takes, will be extended to seal to the firewall, and the duct will be parallel to the center firewall panel.

Well. Yep. This!
RtR knows what's up.
I narrowed the rear instead of flaring the fenders. I made the radiator a bottom-feeder instead of cutting front valance like nearly every other v8 Corvair. You can't possibly think I'm gonna do a roof snorkel.

Oh all right. But next time, please?

How ever much I love this build it's not mine. Got to defer to the builder, not tell him what engine or whatever.
Yes, your canvas as you please. Yes my RSkle blurt was a bit sophomoric as stampster would say, but where will you be pulling intake air from iffen your trying to maintain a somewhat stealth appearance?
You'll need to log in to post.
