Awesome! Sometimes all you have to do is ask, and something great can happen.

OK... so... called up a bunch of places around town. Almost all fab places sell plate aluminum, all of which are mill pieces and not perfectly flat. This is a problem as it'll be expensive to get things true and machined, especially on short notice.

HOWEVER. A good friend of mine owns a composites shop and usually has all kinds of flat media carbon fiber laying around. I'm wondering if I could use some flat media carbon fiber to do this instead. Easier to drill, I have access to a lot of it, and would be easy to whip something up with some heim joints.

It would honestly cost me about the same since by the time I've done aluminum and skimmed it true, some already true flat media carbon would be ready and I just need to cut it.

Gave my buddy a call, left a message, waiting on him to return it so I can see if he's got some that's thick enough to be solid. I want nothing that's going to bow or bend, so if he can get me some that's solid enough we should be gold.

Headed to my buddy's shop tomorrow morning to go check out the carbon fiber he has. He appears to have some that is very thick that won't bend/bow on me due to thickness. Much much easier to work with than aluminum, and it'll hardly weigh anything.

We'll find out in the morning.

I'd probably get some aluminum channel, some rod ends and a few bits of hardware to mount the rod ends to the channel and the channel to the ITBs.

Use the rod ends to support the linkage and plunk some mesh filters on the air horns while you sort out the plenum situation.

Picked out some thick CF. Doesn't bend, doesn't flex. Light as a feather. He has to make it and it'll be ready by friday, custom cut to the exact specs I need.

My buddy showed me the expansion of his shop this morning. They're apparently taking on some custom projects for CF Drift Boats. Crazy stuff. He now has 3 bays instead of 2 and has enlarged his business bigtime. He let me snag a picture of his custom truck he rebuilt, and the custom carbon work he did on it.

I figured you guys could probably appreciate it. He likes a matte finish so he went with a matte smooth finish on the panels. His quality is out of this world good.

Right?

I remember years ago when he was making RC car parts and working his ass off just to get basic projects to get by. Started at Epic Aircraft, and moved independent into his own place. Work was tough and there was a few times I remember him saying they weren't sure how hard that season would be. Now he has contracts doing huge projects and has become a master of composites.

I love seeing people, especially my peers I grew up with, start something and succeed. Makes me proud, since it seems over the years that so many fall by the wayside. Kind of reminds me of that, "The kids aren't alright" song by the offspring haha. Except once in a while there's some exceptions to the rule, and some people move on to do something. He's certainly figured that out.

Carbon is here and freshly made for me, beautiful finish. I peeled back one of them to look but need to keep the plastic while I drill, cut, etc. Heim joints should be here today or tomorrow, AND the new head gaskets from cometic have arrived. Ahhhhh so sweet.

The only issue is the CF was cut 1/2" shorter than I wanted, but it'll still work and this stuff is so thick and strong, I'm not concerned with any issues of it cracking under pressure. I can't even bend the stuff putting my weight on it. Pretty incredible stuff. As you can see, it'll be close, but with the holes drilled properly it'll be fine.

Seriously though today was insane at work and I gotta go back in for midnight maintenance, but while I had some time, I got this going :) Muahaha.

I posted it up in another car group and one guy told me, "You're doing it wrong, the carbon sheet needs to be on the OTHER SIDE"

I tried to explain to him that the stock airboxes have the linkage and rod built into them with 3 bearings, and the sheet is only to emulate the airbox linkage... and that I'm putting plenums on top of the ITBs once everything is done.

I think the guy was legitimately confused and thought I was trying to make another airbox around the ITBs.

I'm glad you guys dig it. I'm going to work on the other one tonight. I have a stepped drill to get the 40mm diameter for the itbs itself on the barrel holes.

Unfortunately, borla said they would ship my linkage and forgot, and I emailed them and they're shipping it today, so I should be able to hopefully have the throttle bodies and everything setup by the end of the week.

Well, at some point it'll be there, so no need to travel to the future lol.

Oh man you weren't joking about the AN fuel line fitting being that close to the box edge....

Looks great I can't wait to see the final result.

Yep, it's going to be much better to go this route so I can do some universal airboxes/plenums later.

Although... I suppose I COULD make my own airboxes... I do have enough carbon fiber to pull it off.

Alright, I need some serious help.

So... the starter needs rebuilt. The drive itself had standing water from sitting outside in a box full of parts from previous ownership. So i was told.

The drive is no longer made by bosch. Bosch said "call lamborghini" and lamborghini said "no longer available."

The core is a 314 series bosch starter, used in the old mercedes benz cars in the 70s. So I can get the core rebuilt, but not the drive.

Is there ANYONE who can rebuild drives? or make new drives custom? If so, I need help ASAP. Machinist said the engine will be done and ready for dyno day in less than 2 weeks. Time is approaching.

My alternative is IMI, I called and spoke to a very nice gentleman, Jack. They make custom hi-torque starters and reverse engineer and can make them. I'm looking at a 2 week turnaround time, plus shipping.

My machinist and I are both frustrated on this one. Preferably if I can rebuild the original, that'd be great. If not, I can get one made custom. Either way, I need some help finding someone who can make or rebuild a drive on short notice, otherwise I need to go the custom route.

I've called every parts place I can and no one has any of these drives.

Part number is 1 006 209 442

Do you have a good alternator/starter rebuild guy local to you? Ive brought Hitachi stuff from obscure JDM cars in and they have just pieced together what it needed from parts bin trial and error stuff.

Yeah, what crankwalk said. Those guys will take one look at it and figure out a workaround in a day.

I did, and the only 314 series he can get is clockwise bits. Need counterclockwise which is all euro market.

You'll need to log in to post.
