So THAT is what happened with my build threads!
I think I get where OP is coming from. Imagine your buildthread generated the kind of comments bringatailer.com did. Unless u knew exactly what you wanted your project to be, and gave no e36m3s about what others thought, it would kind of suck.
"Strange inquiry by the OP given he often comments on others' build threads."
I do, and that's one of the reasons why I was asking the original question. Most of the time what's going on here is a genuine thrill to "watch," once in a while I DO get frustrated by some of the ways in which a build seems to take a strange (to my mind) turn. I can think of one build in particular which involved an MGB E Modified car. It's ALWAYS gotten to me that the builder would build a perfectly good MGB GT race car and rather than sell it and start a new better build with a different, better body, he chopped it down into a roadster and went on to build several more cars out of it.
This is ALL on me, of course. That type of behavior totally goes against my thrifty (read CHEAP) way of doing things. I certainly would have sold the first car, pocketed some of the money and begun the next car. Sold that rather than continuing on with more modifications, pocketed some of that money and went on to build the third and fourth rendition. Selling off and syphoning off some of the money as I went.
I REALLY try not to interject my own prejudices into other folks builds, but sometimes fail in this. Considering the radical butchery that I have planned for the much venerated MGA roadster, I'm (understandably) a bit reluctant to hang my ass out in the wind here and have it chewed off for destroying a motoring icon.
All of this refers back to my original question and is tainted by my own posts on other's builds and my sometimes annoyance with what they do in their builds. Yup—I can dish it out, but am reluctant to accept it !
It's the residual "human" left in me I guess, been trying to burn that outta me for years now, but . . .

There are plenty of reasons why someone should cut up a "perfectly good car". We hacked a rust free Chevelle into a stock car. We tried for a few months to sell or trade it and start with a rust pile but no one was interested. I was bothered for a minute but working with clean metal for once was a treat.
I am a Two handed Meat eating Glutin for Knowledge, I love my Dogs but People have to earn it, Cars Have a Soul And I wish to Nuture that. I like them Originalish but have no problum for Radiclizine or stepping on Pureist Toe's.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm reasonably certain I have left quite a few people on here scratching their head and wondering what the hell I was thinking.
My main purpose for doing a build thread, is to share my demented ideas with the few people in the world that may actually appreciate it, even if they don't completely understand it.

There is very little crosstalk between the regular internet and here. The R63 thread brought in a TON of new commenters and they have been 99% positive. People don't seem to sign up to be rude which has been very nice.

Again, just my own prejudices. Shouldn't chop up what you can sell and begin again with a worse example.
Keep the good china on the shelf and use the cracked plates. Only bring out the finer pieces for company. Treat yourself like crap and others like kings.
An old sentiment that I can't readily shake I guess. I'm afraid that a lot of this way of thinking will come out in the build thread. I have a smidge more work to do on the chassis right now, once completed I'll begin a thread. Almost cant wait, it'll be a while lot of fun after reading what fun others are getting into with their own builds. While posting about building my little Austin A35, I wasn't as concerned since it was a fairly straight forward, almost restoration thread. This time around it'll be the opposite.
Thanks a TON for the comments and assurances and such. As you can tell, I was truly a bit reticent to go forward with this, now . . . totally encouraged !
TeamE so you are aghast that LooseC made a B/GT disappear before your very eyes only to reemerge as possibly the baddest EMP seen by the hive? One of my very faves (thread)and I have a B/GT in the grosh. Was I upset ,yes only briefly. On the other hand" volvo p1800 to approximation of a ferrari 275gtb spyder : v12, 5spd, tube chassis" by 275NART (builds)is equally severe from the simple standpoint that all that is being utilized is the floor pan (Nohome was kinda speechless)from what appeared to be a pretty sound body. Shook off the initial shock of seeing all the exterior P1800 skin cast aside, but here again before us is another epic build to be witnessed by all those of us that hunger for this E36M3.Your creation will be welcomed by all that reside here.
And besides all this, if no comments were allowed the post would disappear quickly being overshadowed by other posts with newer comments. Then quickly forgotten. A post/comment brings it back to the top so we can continue to enjoy builds/topics.

This, I think there are like 2,000 posts in mine, and 1,900 of them are probably by me
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ wrote: I think you're worrying about something that doesn't really exist on GRM- I haven't seen anyone get big "YOU SUCK YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT LIKE THIS!!!11!" responses here. I build uglier and worse crap than most here, I think, and when someone does chime in with a "you could do it better like this" it's always constructive, useful, and well deserved criticism.
seriously, this. Maybe if you were over on NASIOC or Honda-tech or Bimmerforums or something this would be an issue. But on GRM? This is where people get high praise for dropping a lawn mower engine into a Yugo on 32" mud terrain tires. If you get comments here, they are almost never flames or outright criticisms - more likely just a suggestion from someone who has a good idea. I'd say 99% of suggestions in my build threads have been things that improved my build (either via a method or a part), perhaps things I didn't know before. Unlike other forums I'm on, I've almost never had to have a "comeback" post to any comments left, other than "thanks for the idea!"
You could create the "build thread" offline and then paste it all in after the build is finished.
Then others could see and ask questions without influencing your work in real time. But what fun would that be?
I think the positives of the combined knowledge in this forum would far out the possibility of some annoying comments.

I'm sick of all the LS swaps. You could have made more power with the stock engine.
Sometimes a fairly rare car is heavily modified, but the car gets a new life. Otherwise the car would have maybe just sat and nothing would have ever happened to it. Sometimes a project here might take a odd turn, but then often something different and interesting happens. Reading just about repairing back to original sometimes is kind of dull, some of this stuff wasn't built very well originally anyhow. I have this crazy idea of getting a Cosworth Vega and building the kind of car they should have built. Lighter, faster, better. Of course if I ever did that most would claim I ruined it. With some luck they will all finish rusting before I make that project happen.
By definition a "Forum" requires discussion. It is a place where people gather to evolve ideas.
For the most part, the builds around here are out of the box. As such, some of the engineering and fabricating needs be creative. Even more so when the Grassroots budget comes into play. So the discourse will center on Is it going to work? Is there a better approach to get a better result? Is it safe?
I like the feedback even when it does not back up what I am doing. People here have kept me from making mistakes that would have ended in a worse or less safe result. In many cases, I just need to know how something works cause there are a load of systems and I am not a mechanic.

Just show us your damn car! We are a selfish bunch and want new content to consume.
Think of GRM as a "safe space" for car folk. Except not in the usual context of "safe space". Everyone and every idea is welcome, as are comments and input- even silly ones. Prejudices and biases disappear. Creativity is encouraged. Geography becomes meaningless.
I left Facebook several months ago. It's much more enjoyable here.
In a way, GRM is its own country. The "GRM-zone". There ought to be a currency- perhaps call it the "greasecoin"? Seriously. There are real countries that don't have the national unity that GRM seems to have.
