I've messed with Datsuns since 1979 and I've looked at buying many Z's the past 44 years. For some reason I can't spend the big bucks and always get a project car.
2022 - I find a 240Z on the Windy City Z Club - we talk for close to 18 months.
2023 - car built 12/1971 - picked up today, trans in trunk, engine still at the guys house for pickup at a later date. Light rust but not original paint as I see overspray but NO bondo.
The joke is I'll be driving it in 9 years.
Look at it this way... one brick at a time.
Repair engine, reinstall. Produce running car. Check brakes and tires. Install new pads rotors and tires. Drive car. You have 8 months till June. Now make it so. Now you have something to do this winter. You should see the Z running around where I live. Paint is shot, lots of dings and such. Drives it to Cars and Coffee a gets alot of people checking it out. It makes me smile just to see one driving around. :0)

That's kinda the plan - I'd like to experience a stock 240Z first. I'm not looking for a show car - I'm going to do what you are saying.
Similar to what the Hot Rod guys do - just get it running.
Good to hear :0)
I will be starting a similar job soon. Need to finish the area that the job will be done in first

Is that a 2000? I had a low windshield 1600 - great cars - I loved the roar of those carbs
Three pedal car or auto trans?
I have a auto trans I don't want. Appears to be semi freshly rebuilt.
Yours for the cost of getting it out my shop.

Got a 1600 in my garage I really need to get to work on. Doing a build thread?

I'm still bringing parts home. I have to go next weekend to get 2 engines and 2 transmissions. This was a 5 hour parts run.

It is a 2000. It must have been in a accident back in the day when it was painted the color it is now. It has older front fenders on it. I am curious to find out if it was a race car way way back. Won't know till I start stripping the paint off.
Nice score on all the parts with your Z !!

January, 1970 Road & Track
Was one of those yours?
Back when I was around 12-13 my Uncle had two Roadsters. If I remember right a red one and a white one. I only saw them once.

No - I was in grade school in 1970.
Started cleaning parts out of the car - lots of mouse poop and general nasty smell - currently sorting parts deciding what to keep/toss. Someone filled the hatch with suspension pieces and a 4-speed.
I know my rule is to never toss parts but this came with 16 really rusty steel wheels - space is a premium and some had to go. I'm finding more surface rust than I thought but the first task is to get an engine into it and get it running. I gotta clean the interior better so some of that smell leaves.
Today the drivetrain came home - my last visit to the previous owners house.
Two L24 engines (one serial matches the car), one E31 head and three 4-speed transmissions
Someone bent the door back ripping out the hinge so I hung a black door until I figure out when/how to fix. The original door was less rusty so I need to work on that down the road. Body work is secondary to getting it running form the road.
The interior is white from the factory and the foam is weird and puffy so I'm swapping in some black seats.
Willow the dog likes to hang out in garage with me.
On the road in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Head to downtown to a salad place to grab dinner. Filled my mind all day with my Datsun build as I made sales calls.
I look over at an automobile repair shop and I can't get those 240Z's out of my head.
That is incentive isn't it?
I keep seeing this on Craigslist.
But this one is all done
Cleaned under hood - pulled motor mounts. Have primer for some of the surface rust and some matching blue paint - overall the frame rails are in good shape. I'm still finding mouse poop in strange areas.
I'd like to drop in the engine over Christmas break but if I don't that's okay too. Wife isn't crazy about messy garages so I have to keep it clean as I go.
There's one original tire on the car - must've been the spare tire and it's holding air with no issues.
Glad I realized this after I flat towed it home 35 miles one Friday afternoon.
So what was the result of all of that dancing??

Confirmation that dog is man's best friend!
I cleaned up the engine bay and there is a narrow 3" long hole under the battery tray. I'll probably put in a patch from underneath- the steel inner fender and the tray is rock solid so I hate to take out the battery tray. This is not going to be a 100 point restoration- more hooliganism than sitting at a car show.
That engine bay cleaned up nice!
