Making progress. Just a thought, check your oil for gas washing. If it smells heavy of gas, change your oil, so everything seats properly. If not, carry on. You're becoming the resident pro on the C4.

Turned the floats the wrong way, raising them to the point they spewed forth from the sight plugs, ran onto the exhaust, and burned all the paint off the front of the truck by the time i got back with a fire extinguisher.

It sucked. Lost my eyebrows.....

Just side story on Corvettes. Back in the 70's a friend was looking at a Corvette to buy cheap. No start, pours gas down carb, kaboom, needless to say he owned a burned Vette.

Day-112(1-hour):

I got the float levels readjusted. I was surprised by how far out they both were, but then realized I'd initially adjusted them with the car on jackstands. They apparently weren't level.

I did have momentary panic when fuel started pouring out the rear plug at approximately the same volume as a water fountain. Thankfully the car was off.

I also had a surprise guest to check up on me - the bigger surprise is I was able to get close enough for a pic.

She's not quite a big lizard in my back yard, but then again I don't own a bitchin' Camaro either.

You adjusted the floats but didn't start it? Sounds like a tease.

After spilling around a gallon of gas all over the passenger's side of the engine I though it might be a good idea to not attempt to start it tonight. Besides, I probably need to pull the plugs and clean them first.

Wheres your sense of adventure?!

I wouldn't bother with the plugs until after break-in. They'll still fire with an HEI even if they're pretty dirty, and there won't be anything reliable to read off them until the rings are worn in and you've done some tweaking on the carb anyway.

Sometimes it's better to work on things with a clear head. Day light is better, so you can check for leaks etc. Patience, you are getting close.

Ever type out a post in jest but then you know some dumbass will blow themselves up and it'll be my fault?

Stampie was going to say: It's been my experience that gas vaporizes way before it actually catches fire.

I've already had to pull & clean the plugs twice due to flooding/fouling.

I can offer no help as I have never owned a Holly equipped vehicle. But I just want to try and help keep your spirits up. If we lived close I'd buy you a conciliatory beer. This is honestly my favorite thread on here right now. I, and I know everyone else on here as well, really really want to see you succeed with this car. It's an awesome car, an awesome project and we all admire your work. Don't throw int he towel. We are all rooting for you. I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

sorry, I have nothing useful to offer, but I just wanted to send an 'atta boy' for you.

WARNING DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

As long as the container can handle heat you can light the vapors and the gasoline liquid below won't catch fire. It'll actually start boiling after a while. Ok I think my redneck side is showing to much.

Thank you Adrian! Truth be told, this is about the point where I usually get bored/frustrated/broke an sell off the project - just like every other build thread I've started. That's exactly why I've avoided any project cars for so long.

I do think I could probably break even(at least) if I sold it, based on what people think C4s are worth down here, but honestly this car checks off a lot of boxes for me. Not just C4s in general, but this one being a Z51 automatic 1985, and having a decently presentable interior/exterior. So it makes no sense to bail out now, although the number of times I've seriously considered giving it a Viking funeral keeps increasing...

Pete, if the Holley frustrates you further I have an Edelbrock 1405 that was tuned to a 1991 L98 engine that could be had cheaply. The only downer is the 1405 is manual choke but the Edelbrock choke kit is quite easily installed.
