Thanks for explaining that. This type of compressor is all new to me and it's very interesting. I can't see anything of the compressor with it on the van (it was sooooo easy to see a week ago) but I looked at the new one today and it looks like the valve is just held in with a snap ring. Now I'm thinking if it still doesn't make cold I can pull the compressor, pull the valve out of it, match it up against one of them on eBay, and give it a go.
Again, Thanks for explain how this all works and giving another path for repair other than just swapping out expensive parts.

Your AMG project is what inspired me to tackle the E38. So if you now tackle an E38, I'm pretty sure I have to get an AMG.

You are an excellent writer, with a sensitivity and self-deprecating charm reminiscent of Peter Egan. You'll do great writing up your next project. It needs to be an interesting project with broad appeal, like this. But unlike a well-optioned mini-van, a racy exotic is everyman's dream. I mentioned a 355. A 348 would do as well. I don't know of one yet, but they're always out there.
That big, scary engine out service (for which they were designed, unlike your current achievement) would fit the bill. I'd look forward to your demystification of the process, but after what you've just done, you might make it look TOO easy. Maybe even child's play. Anger a lot of Ferrari mechanics who charge $5-15K for what they say is one solid week of work, but which you can do (and document) in 3 days. Between family obligations, of course.
Oh, hey, the $50K you just saved your family in servicing this Benz would have bought you a Ferrari, and that price, a recently serviced one! Orrr... spend $30K for one with needs. Still less than a newish well-optioned mini-van.

Went by COOLFLOW and spoke with John Noble re your a/c. He said he had not worked on a benze for at least 10 years. Rembers the job ran $5,000. Said similar job on American or Japanese would be a small fraction of that. Parts are way too high. Says "They lost the other war, but they are making it up now." Not familiar with troubleshooting codes, etc. He uses a subscription and fee-based service, IDENTIFIX, to give expert guide, part diagrams, etc. when he is stuck. Somebody mentioned "corvette nuckleheads would not build what you ordered." I thought I ran across you saying you had corvette build date posted somewhere. Short story?

The short version of the Corvette story. Callaway announces the Aerowagon. Callaway announces they are taking orders. I place an order through a dealer and make a BIG deposit. Chevrolet builds me the car and delivers it to the museum for Callaway to pick up. Callaway says "nah, we're not really building Aerowagons yet, maybe later?". I get my deposit back, the dealer has to figure out what to do with the car, Callaway is off my Christmas list.

PSH, i wonder if you need to be a writer for GRM and have a column in the magazine. Step by step of your process.
AMG would have worked in probably a year of magazine.
I say find your own project, start a patreon to fund it's progress.
I.e. $10 per person for each update.
I commented on GRM's Facebook page about this car being a "project car" they didn't have to pay for. Condensing this thread into six articles, adding some different pics, and providing some new material we haven't seen yet could be fun for all involved.
