My shift handle with nitrous button is milled from a clear acrylic towel rod from a discarded shower enclosure.
My motor mount adapters were part of an andersen patio door.
My throttle body spacer was a wheel adapter.
Fuel rail hold downs came from Home Depot electric row.
Fuel pump bracket used to hold up a garage door opener.
Wow i really have cobbled this thing together.
I did send the driveshaft out and have it remade as it was welded crooked last time someone shortened it. That's the only thing that wasnt done in or in front of my garage
Thank you for sharing with the stay at home crowd. Very impressive!

If you buy 6+ they become 50% off, mix and match. I got my knocked over cone with a +2 seconds stickers from them too
Thanks, just spend my hard earned money on stickers.

After all, why stick to the budget when you can just make up imaginary numbers to make it work.
I see a lot of these contraptions and am genuinely impressed by some of the make-it-work cheap solutions to things, but the whole $2016 thing is a joke.
I only know of you via your E-personality, but if you need an E-hug, I'm here for you.

Agreed. Things can be done very cheaply when you re-purpose and modify cheap parts. Nothing in this build screams foul to me.

Yeah. I've known this guy longer than almost anyone else in my life outside of my family. If you're saying he fudged the numbers, you're way out of line.
You know I've always wanted to know what makes someone an shiny happy person. It can't be hereditary because I've seen a son be an shiny happy person but not the father. You know I think shiny happy people just woke up one morning and decided "I want to be an shiny happy person. I don't want to enjoy life."

Soooooo, because you can't do it, no one else can either?
Hell, I'm jealous that I can't be that creative.
It's a refined science to get to the pointy end on a challenge budget.
I am a first timer. I'm just hoping to get it finished under budget. Let also need not being DFL. hats off to the guys that can blend bought right/built right/ driven right.
I'm no where as good as Pat but this year I'm at least looking at trash piles at the side of the road a little more. My team even did a scraper evening this year. Had fun riding in the back of the pickup looking for stuff we might be able to use.

I considered using imaginary numbers to build a Challenge car. But they were too complex.
Some of us do spend more than $2016 on trial and error on the car but have less than $2016 worth of purchases on the car when we get to the event.
^not me obviously... don't check any of my for sale threads.
I love how people who have never been to the Challenge seem to know so MUCH about the Challenge. Asshats.

the guy is debating on pulling his dipstick and putting a plug in in order to use other, more useful parts... i would consider him to be one to follow the book with his build

FYI i have a 3 page budget spreadsheet down to the cent. i even have a misc garage stock listing that i overestimated to be safe for nuts/bolts/zipties that i've had for years. most of it was all free, but to be fair i put a line item in the spreadsheet for it and added some $. i was at a guy's house one time and he had a full hardware store SAE bolt rack. told me to get it the F out of his way and i could have it for free, all the fasteners included. still using them. a customer used to work for the phone company and when he passed his wife gave me everything he accumulated from working there forever because it was in her way. i have not bought zip ties in 10 years and still have 10 years left. i found the last receipt i was looking for, and took something off last year's budget that is no longer on the car and was able to add sway bar bushings, which about cancelled each other out and my working budget is sitting at $2015.02.
do i have $2015 in my car? no, my tires were $396. i could have gone with purple crack and paid $800 for tires and it still wouldn't count. my harness was $56 and my roll bar padding was $8. i scrapped the engine donor, the engine that came in the car initially, sold the transmission that came in the car, sold some stuff i didn't need, traded the truck intake and exhaust manifolds and y pipe with cats for a camaro intake, exhaust manifolds with broken studs, and a catless y pipe that had to be cut into it's bends and welded back together to work. the guy i traded them to probably scrapped the cats and got his stuff for free, but it worked out for both of us. except that i had to deal with the broken studs and he got nice ones.
i've been scrounging for years, as i spent most of that time building myself up as one of the best at what i do in my area. you work for very little to get your name out there. it's amazing what people will throw away on trash night. i picked up a brand new underfloor power brake pedal assembly for a 49-54 chevy one night. saw the shiny gold coating and knew it was probably a car part. sitting right there in the trash on top of a bucket. my air filter on the datsun was in the trash can in front of advance auto up the street from my parents' house probably 15 years ago, and this is the 4th vehicle it's been on. still washes up fine. my buddy dropped off some 1/8 and 3/16x4x8' long plates one day that he grabbed in the trash for me. clean up with the blast cabinet and they make perfect pieces to build brackets from. remember, the bandsaw and welder and all your other tools don't count toward your budget as they're not part of the car. that shower rod shift handle? i had a customer that needed a rod for his shower and i saw one on the side of the road. a couple clips and the rod was out. i took it over to put in for him and he decided he wanted to just replace the whole thing, and i knew exactly what i was going to do with that 1" diameter piece of clear acrylic. i was fighting with myself about a $60 shifter with a button inside it when i knew i could use the button that came with my nitrous kit(in budget, all $398 of it) and make my own. then there was the beat down van. it was a taxi for over 400k miles then went to someone who used it for their salvage business, then used for construction before finally it barely started and nothing really worked outside of the headlights. perfect challenge donor. when i pulled the engine, it had the little reman things on it that melt off and void the warranty if you overheat it, so all i know is that it doesn't have 400K+ miles. everything else is an unknown. the builder was so reputable that it has 2 different casting number heads
i don't need to justify myself to anyone except tim or david or jg or joe or rick or ed or tommy or whichever staff checks over my budget, and my own conscience. i don't have it in me to cheat. i'm not looking to win at all costs. my car isn't set up to handle as well as it could right now at the expense of getting an engine in it and towing it 1000 miles just to hang out with the guys and have fun for a few days and nights. as you can tell, 98 cents isn't going to buy me a lot of spring options. it's about the people and the experience, and there are some people that'll just never get it. i'm not going to call names, or insinuate anything, or label the entire budget cap as BS. i'm going to go, take my stack of documentation with me, and hope this questionable engine holds together so i can have some fun in my car.
Pat,
Guys who lack talent will not believe the validity. It's easier to criticize others, rather than to accept one's own inability to build. Mastercarders versus Master Builders.
It's the same whining every year. I hate when whiner try to highjack participant's threads.
Dietcoke has no credibility or backbone. He did the same whining less tha a year ago.

His next post will be "How dare you judge me?"...and "you don't know how talented I am" after he has passed judgement on 'all' the Challengers. Folks, this guy has history of being critical and won't come down to see it for himself.

Touche'....well said, patgizz.
I'm a rookie this year and and must say that it has been a fun experience. I too questioned whether a car can be built this cheap. Having built a few road racing cars in the past I knew how expensive it can be. I wore out more than one debit card buy new parts on my road racing efforts. Decided to enter The Challenge on a lark. I kind of dreaded the scrounging aspect of the competition but it has actually turned out to be fun. People are amazed when you explain the premise. And generally want to help out with ideas or scrounge parts. A Forum dedicated to my model has come forward and offered tons of technical advice on a car that I was unfamiliar with. I don't have the talent, tools, technical skills or time build a challenge winning car. But the constraints of the budget have actually been a fun experience believe it or not. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the characters in person. See their handiwork . And though I don't expect to be competitive, I've already had a great time building my own car and I'm positive I will have an even greater time at the event

One more thing, having known Pat for all of the years, I can say, unequivocally...
he is a cheap bastard.
He was finding low budget solutions to making cars work well before he got involved in this board or this challenge. Years and years ago I'd get an email or a forum post from him showing something he scrounged together to make his car or house or anything else work. He's the real deal, even if I hate him for it.
In reply to patgizz:
Simply amazing.... I regret that I won't be there to see it in person. Good luck to you!
I hope my 2017 build goes well and be there next year.
But, I have to ask... who throws away a 49-54 chevy mastercylinder?
