Hey what about stop at my house...  technically it was the 1st

Don't know how I forgot to thank you other than I'm a dumbass.  I really appreciate you letting us borrow your trailer. That trailer pulls nice no matter what or how you load it. Or trip would have been to Hades without it.

so, is this the official build thread... or just the "we went and got a car adventure thread" ?

It's the official build thread.  Thoughts right now are putting the Cadillac 425/400 combo in it.  I want it set back so that the front of the block is even with the centerline of the front wheels.  But that's not where I started my mental build.  I actually started at the rear end.  I happen to have an E36 rear subframe laying around complete with a section of driveshaft. It has a 3.15 LSD in it which matches up pretty well with the Cadillac engine.  Did some quick measuring and I think we'll be within a couple of inches of my setback goal using the E36 rear and driveshaft bolted to the Cadillac's 400 yoke. So then I'm thinking you know, I want to do something about the front end.  Since it's only welding wire and time let's throw in a 2wd XJ front end.  Now some of this may be whiskey induced from last week and some may be from lack of sleep during our trip but I will say that right now I'm planning out a cheap frame table from some 20 foot sticks I have laying around.

What would the xj front swap get you that the s10 woth some tall ball joints and tweaks wont?

I came here to ask the same question.  The XJ is a beam axle.  It worked on the Penske Donahue XJ-R because they took a pie cut out of the center to get camber.  The SLA in the S10 should be better than that.

It'll solve the issue that I've always wanted a straight front axle 2wd vehicle mainly.  I have other theories about how it might perform better but only way to see if I'm right is to build it.

there's also the whole (hole?) D&E concourse aspect of that kind of swap... which, I'm not sure is a factor for you Stampie.

I'm glad I'll get to follow along such an ambitious project!

Someone pointed out how engine swapped vehicles score higher.  Not sure a swap just to swap makes more points but I'd think if you do a swap to meet a performance goal you could score points. If you think about it my suspension swap sounds stupid.  I'm swapping IFS/Live axle rear for straight axle front/IRS.  But I think it'll work in ways I want for performance. Here's my design/build rules:

Build what I want not others.

Use what I already have if possible.

Make it fast.

Make it handle.

Think outside the box.

Build as cheaply as possible.

In other news, Lil Stampie and I sat in MacNasty and made voom voom noises.  I also measured the firewall for possible cuts to setback the engine.
