The white Husky, no, not a dog

Berotec Cumpan showed up a few days ago and it looked complete, nothing missing.  Time to install it, first things first, make sure it powers on.  Since it's a used purchase, I don't want to spend a ton of time installing it only to find out its dead and I need to return it.  So Brittannia Composites mask off and get to the switched power that I'm using for my GPS.

Yep, it works!

Time to install it.  I want to use the same unswitched power that I've got my GPS on, but unlike the GPS, I can't turn this off separately.  I hit up my basement stash and found a switch, which perfectly fit into the switch pop outs on the Brittannia tower.  Ok, perfect, since I've been wanting to get my GPS on switched power too.

Wired it in, which was pretty easy

Decision made to use the Cumpan handle bar mount, I thought about sticking to the dash on the tower, but on the bars it lines up perfectly with the factory dash

Berotec suggests running the wires down the right side of the frame, but I went down the left side instead, seems cleaner this way

You grab the oil temperature, tach signal and gear position signal from the left side of the bike.  The oil temp was kind of a PITA to get to, you need to pull out a plug that's above the front sprocket and behind the header pipe.  A bunch of people recommend taking the header/exhaust off, but I managed to get it out with a long ball end 5mm allen.  Putting the sensor in was harder, to be honest.  After that I put 3M body tape on the Cumpan and mounted it to the bars.

Success!  You can see the black switch to the right of the factory dash, that controls the power for the GPS and Cumpan.

My Seat Concepts seat should show up by the end of the month, that's really the last thing I'm going to do to the bike.  In the offseason I'll replace the fuel filters, then it's ready to go.  Hopefully I can talk my friend into riding this Sunday, otherwise I'll go on a shorter, morning ride solo.

Typically my riding partner and I go out for at least a long weekend ride each season.  We'd talked about hitting the Alpine Loop this year but it never happened.  We finally managed to link up and at least do a day ride yesterday.  250 miles, 4 passes, 2 paved, 2 dirt.  Bike did great!  I'm still figuring out the range with the Rade Garage auxiliary tank, it's nowhere near as much as the Safari tank I had on my old 690, but should be adequate.

So after waiting forever for it to get made I got the Seat Concepts comfort XL seat, I had it for the ride I posted above.  I was really torn between choosing the comfort vs comfort xl, got the xl to see.  It's a comfortable seat, but made it almost impossible for me to put a foot down, since it was so wide.  I couldn't really scoot forward on it, to the more narrow part due to my tank bag.  I did like how it felt off road, I was able to hook my thighs into the part where it got wide and really shove the bike around with my feet. 

Then a used Renazco saddle popped up on eBay.  I've run Renazco saddles on all my previous bikes and really like them.  Decision made, I returned the Seat Concepts seat and bought the Renzaco.  Won't be able to test it out on a long ride until next season though.  Next up for this bike, during winter storage is going to be replacing the fuel filters.

I have been on the hunt for one of these for mine. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger soon.

I've been really pleased with it.  I've had to calibrate the gear position a few times, as it gets confused sometimes but seems solid now.  Really wish KTM had just stuck with the earlier dashs for these with the large analog tach etc.  Supposedly people heard at EICMA that the next gen 690/701 will have the TFT dash, so if that happens it'll be a big upgrade.

I agree with the dash being sparce. I think I plan on grabbing one this winter. 

Some off season work done.  On my last ride I struggled with getting the stock kick stand back up, especially with the wider seat.  Doesn't help that there isn't anything on the kick stand to grab with your boot and plastic motocross boots just slip on the metal stand.  I'd pulled my Swiftkicker off my old 690, so tossed that onto the 701.

Next up was cleaning the air filter.  The filter skin was really dirty, the filter itself was fairly clean, but I decided to clean it anyways.  Currently waiting for it to dry out, then I'll oil it tonight, let it sit overnight and install it tomorrow.

Bike came with this nice Mosko bag, which has tons of pockets and isn't all that tall.  However it's longer than my Wolfman bag, so eats up seat space

Decision made to install the Wolfman and see how I like it.

I also centered the Berotec Cumpan display on my bars, it really bugged me to see it off center.  Cleaned and lubed the chain too.  Last task is to replace the in tank fuel filter and install the filter sock onto the fuel pump.  Might wait until Spring because the tank is fairly full of fuel and I'd rather not dump it all over my garage floor.

I also have to do fuel filters on mine soon. Plan on doing the metal wix filter upgrade on mine.

That's what I got, very affordable at ~$11 from the local auto parts store.  I looked into getting the Golan filter that replaces the little tea bag in the fuel injector line and was shocked to see that it was ~$70.  I don't remember spending that much for it when I got it for my 690.  Think I'll just do the metal WIX and add the Profill pre pump filter and call it good.

I auctally just ordered a profill for my 701 and my 500. I replace the small inline one every oil change on my 500.

So I've been cruising FB Marketplace looking for Kendon Fold up trailer that'll haul 2 bikes.  A Kendon knock off popped up a few days ago, holds three bikes.  Ok, more is better than less and the price was really attractive.  Went to check it out today, could use new tires but otherwise works fine, although upgrading the tail/turn light to LED's would be a good idea.  The only thing I don't like is it doesn't have casters on it, which the Kendon has and lets you stand it up and move it around.  This also has a "tail" on it that supports the trailer when it's standing up, which makes it stable like that but also complicates matters as far as adding casters to move it around.

In the end the deal was too good to pass up, so I paid the man, got the signed title and hooked it up to the Touareg.

The trailer bounced around a bunch empty, with my 701 loaded it should be pretty smooth.  I was able to put it in the garage for now because my 996 is up on the lift.

It can't stay there long term though, as the 996 won't fit with it there, it eats up too much length.  There's nowhere else to put it in my garage, so I need to figure out a way to move it while it's standing up so I can fit it through the gate to my backyard.  Neighbor had the idea of using the car dollies to move it around, which might work.  Then my plan is to take away some rock and some grass, replace that with pavers and then lay it down next to my AC compressor and deck.

It wont' fit standing up behind the AC compressor, it's too wide to fit there.  I'd rather have it laying down on it's real wheels so it's not visible over my fence, the HOA won't like that.  I need to see how much it's going to cost to do the yard work, then I'll decide whether I keep this trailer sell it.  I'd love to keep it around as it lets me and 2 riding buddies do a drive and ride.  It also lets me easily bring my moto and mtn bike to my parents house in So Cal.

That's way cheaper than what my dealer charged me!  They charged me $10 for one filter, not five...

Got the motivation Sunday to swap out the fuel filters on the bike.  I bought a fluid transfer tool from the Hammer Store, it didn't work all that well.  Ended up draining a TON of fuel into my catch pan.

Didn't find the Mahle fuel filter I expected but I've been told this is stock too? 

Versus the new hotness

Here's where I ran into some trouble.  The stock fuel filter uses the one time crush clamps.  I went into my Quantum fuel pump kit and found it had clamps in it, which I assumed fit my fuel lines.  I went ahead and cut one of the crush clamps, tried to install the metal fuel filter and...

Yeah, that's not going to work.  None of the parts stores had smaller clamps that weren't worm gear, which I don't want to use.  Ordered a set of the crush clamps off Amazon, it arrived last night, missing the pliers it was supposed to have.  They're sending a replacement that'll arrive Friday.  I'll probably grab a few clamps out of the kit now just so I can finish the job, replace them when the new kit arrives and then return the old kit.  Oddly no clamps on the fuel lines on the fuel pump, only the fuel filter?  Thinking I might put clamps on the fuel pump, that seems like a good idea...

On to replacing the tea bag filter, only to find some previous owner had installed a Golan

I need to remove it to clean it, grab the necessary clamps and install the metal in tank fuel filter, then button that up.  I received the larger 701 LR radiator fan, it's a Spal that you can order from Amazon for less than half the dealer price.  Waiting for the fan shroud to come in from my dealer, then I'll install it and all the off season work will be done.
