I'm building a new Cheetah with my body, frame and an upgraded drive train. (LS1 with Tremec TKX 5 speed ). Since I plan to drive this car over long distances I want a top. But, I want to retain the ability for open top driving. I was planning to make a fast back style coupe top that would hinge in the back and can be easily removed. I started to mock that up and then remembered that years ago I had purchased a MGB convertible top frame. It was hidden in my shop. ( I use the MGB windshield)
This week I test fit the top frame to my car. Obviously it fit the windshield perfectly. I was surprised that the length fit my car. And, it mated to the rear deck really well too. I cut off the brackets that bolted the frame to the MGB. I can easily make a bracket that attaches to the base of the roll bar. The width is perfect.
I mocked up the top using the frame and duct tape. I'm a visual guy. I have to see what things might look like.
This looks like a simple and relatively inexpensive solution. New MGB tops are available from around $360.
I'm going to add heat and defroster to this car. Maybe AC? I'm getting old and want creature comforts.
Now I have to decide to go this route or make the fast back hard top.
I'll make side windows (polycarbonate) that will hinge from the windshield frame posts. Planning on having simple receivers that they would slide into and out with out tools. (old jeep soft top side door style)
Having fun
