hellow all. this is my first and offical post. jay (2k4kcqs) has been at me to start a thread on here for my car.

so to get started im a huge vw guy and i love autocrossing. when i was young i fell in love with the "germanlook" style vw super beetles. germanlook style in a super is bacially building a better handling, better breaking beetle. so in short, building a porsche with a vw body. big wheels, big breakes, and big power are all good things. ever since then ive been slowly building one in my head to one day build. so all this started about 4 yrs ago. i bought a 74 super with intentions of a full build up with a type 4 motor, as soon as i got the car i fixed the rust and stripped the car down to a shell. well i moved and the project sat cause of me not really having the time nor the place to really work on it. so i then bought a second super. this time it was a 73 super. this time i wanted to keep it a driving project. i feel other then the 8 months it was down for 2 different motor swaps, i did keep it a driver. i took what i needed off the 74 and scrapped it. so fast fwd 3 yrs, i had a 73 beetle that decited to put in a vw vanagon motor. the only watercooled flat 4 vw ever built. its a really cool powerplant i think. i decited on this as it does share a lot of parts with the original type1 aircooled motor. i did try a type4 motor and it was just a huge disappointment. so after ive now done the wasserboxer swap into my car...i could not be happier. im running megasquirt 1 3.57board running both fuel and spark.

so one night on my way home i was actually tuning my afr's on the car and i had them just about dialed. well i got rear ended on my way home one night and it totalled the car out cause it did damage to the motor and bent both rear quarters heres how it looked before the wreck... .

and after the wreck...

so after all that i started looking for the best super vw built. 75 was the best yr cause they came factory with fuel injected (suites my megasquirt as i dont have to run a return line, and baffled fuel tank) and also came factory with rack & pinion steering. so after 2 weeks of looking i was lucky to have found one in the Denver area. the dude claimed it was a rust free car that had just been painted. well as we all know, this was not to be so true. but lucky for me i know how to do all that. and the car was also the wrong color. see in 1975 vw ended the hardtop superbeetle. so all 1975 supers are a special edition called the "LaGrande" edition....i guess it means "the end". they only came in 3 colors, and all 3 where metallic colors. they came in a matallic blue, a gold/ tanish color, and lastly the color of mine, viper metallic green. and the green was the least sold of all 3 colors combined. so i have kinda a cool super beetle i guess...lol. so i have a build thread over on germanlook.net with all the pics leading up to this point now. so instead of me posting all the pics here from the past, ill just leave you with a link to my build thread and ill continue to update this one as well with new pics and content.

heres the link to my current build thread: http://germanlook.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11579

since jay and i went to wuste, ill post up the pics i have of my car from WUSTE 2013 lucky #7. heres the car as of the wednesday morning. i left for junction to meet up with jay that night. yes this car was a mad dash to get it some what done for the show...lol. i think im still catching up on sleep from this build bash i did. I dig the E36 M3 out of that! Very clean. I had a '76 Viper Green Scirocco, and I never knew that the color also came on Supers. Learn something new every day, you do.

The white car looked perfect. It's sad that it died.
What's it like living with a turbo air cooled car? It seems that removing heat has got to be a huge issue. Any pictures of the inside of the green car?

he's kinda down playing this whole thing if you ask me. . . must be that lack of sleep the vanagon engine is water cooled so this car sports a golf radiator & fan, 4 piston discs up front, CE2 wiring throughout, custom porsche style dash with factory porsche gauges, the list goes on. . . the collaboration of parts is so grm it hurts. the build thread is definitely worth a browse.

oh and the fact that it was basicly a bare shell 5 months ago is noteworthy I think.

Neat, I didn't know people played with the wasserboxer at all, how much power will it support? Needs more tire and/or less wheel.

thanks everyone.

@Mr_Estrotica this was the ONLY beetle to get the L98B viper green color other than the sirocco.

yes i have converted the car to a water cooled car for many reasons, but i wanted to also keep it all VW. i felt this was the best route to go. like jay ( 2K4Kcsq) said... i got lots of work into it in 5 months time. my birthday was june 4th. reason i say that....its damn nice to look back at the car and think...damn thats the best birthday present i could have done for my self. im still looking back at it, and i think...damn...i built that...sweet! lol.

@Vigo the black set of wheels just didnt have the offset that i wanted. when i had them on my white car, i pulled, heated, banged, and hammered the crap out of the stock fenders to get the wheels to fit. they where the XXR 002 15x8, 15x9 et0 all around. this time around i wanted to keep it all under the stock fenders with little mod as possible. all i did to make these wheels fit was pinch the inner lip of the fenders on all 4 corners.

ya i know the wheels and tires sit close to the fenders, but its the look i was going for. i know its not funtinal for track use, but i have coils in the front and am planning to install coils in the back soon. then lowering the car/raising the car wont be that hard. the wheels im running now are 17x8.5 et20 205/40/17 and the rears are 17x10 et15 235/40/17. i guess my underlining goal with the car was that i wanted to pay homeage to the classic look of a german look car, but still add some of todays touches to it.

@Kenny_McCormic im not quite sure what kinda power it will hold, but others over in europe have boosted these motors up to 20lbs with no real issues on a fully stock motor. but i got want that much power. the car only weights 1900lbs. so im shooting for a street/track friendly 160-200hp. the turbo is a volvo unit that comes stock on a lot of the s70-XC volvos. i didnt just choose some turbo off the shelf. this turbo is actually very closely matched for my motor vs what the motor it came on. it will spool quick and ill be right in the sweet spot for the compressor map.

im having some fuel pressure issues right now, so once i get some more $$ saved up i plan on buying a better fuel pressure regulator, and a better fuel pump. then i should be off and driving.

I would SO rock a bug with no fenders!! Then you could use the wheels from the first pic too without any fender rubbing issues!

Looks great man!

@sethmeister4 ya i took that picture while i was body working my fenders. the pic was taken at about 3a.m. in the morning. i was just sitting their, i looked over, and i was like, wow that looks cool with the wheels just hanging out their with no fenders.

now that i talk about it, this remindes me of a pic i saw. a guy over in japan took a baja kit, put it on a bug, and slammed it. ones first impression would be that is stupid, but it looks sharp. i think on a all out racecar, it would work well. ill try and dig up the pic.

I'm really curious about the front brake upgrade. You don't mention any specifics in you build thread about the calipers (unless I missed it). What are they from?

@fanfoy the brake calipers are from a volvo DL or GL. they came in both vented and non vented rotos. i have the non vented rotors. i did a bunch of looking around on the porsche 914 sites to see what they used for brakes upgrades. i found about these, they say its an awesome upgrade. for the 914 its a bolt on affair, so i thought it would be on mine as well sine the beetle and 914 are almost the same brake setup. i was wrong. but i went with it anyhow. i simply cut everything off the original disc brake bracket, then i got some 1 1/4 thick steel and made some templates and went to work from their. im using the stock 19mm master and the brake travel is a bit much, so when i goto put better racing brake fluid in it, i wanna upgrade to a 22mm master so my pedal will be more firm. the 914 guys say its a bit too much braking with the 4 pot calipers, i say you can never have too much braking. i was turboing it, so i knew i wanted to stop just as fast when i go to barry this thing into a corner. lol

im honestly suprised at all the likes im gettin on here. i know its a crazy odd ball of a car to even think of throwing around a track, but when set up right, a super can seriously hang with a supercar. theirs a guy over on germanlook.net that has a full onn track super and he almost out ran a mclerin super car thru a canyon. its a rabbit in a turtle's shell! lol

@sethmeister4 unfortunately i have yet to even really drive this thing. im dealing with some fueling issues right now. so i car is just sitting on my trailer behind my dads shop right now. i just dont have the money right now to work on it...believe me....its freking killing me to just let it sit knowing with about $200 and 2 hrs of work i could be driving it and tuning it. hoping in a months time after i get cought up on all my bills, ill get back at it. when i goto my first track day...believe me, you all will know about it. and im sure jay will be their as well, so i know he will have some gopro footage to share with you all.

i thought it would be time for a little update since im over due for about 5 months. first things first, i FINALLY got this monster running. id say my tune that im running on right now is about 60% of where it needs to be, but i need more time to learn the ignition side of things before i go any further.

driving the car has just been great. it stops really well with the 4pot calipers i did from a volvo. its got TONS of TQ and power. right now boost is set at only 8lbs psi and it really moves. with a better tune i wanna try 10 lbs of boost, but i honestly am good with 8lbs for a while. with that said, i knew the tranny was the weak link considering its a bone stock tranny. so i knew that i needed to drive it with some common since. but, its apparent that even that wasnt enough. about 2 weeks of me driving it, with no burnouts, no hard shifting, but a lot of good power pulls, 2nd gear is making a whine like its a dog box out of a rally car, and ive spun 3rd and 4th gears on the main shaft. but im not worried. ive called R/C trans outta Vegas and they can build me a tranny for a really good price. so come tax season i plan on getting a new trans.

the rear coilovers i bought ended up being too long when the shock is fully compressed. its my mistake. but ive found some that will work and im hoping to get then changed out soon so i can get the rear of the car where i want it to sit.

also i had major issues with my sunroof and ended up really messing up the sunroof cables, mainly the plastic pieces of the backs of the cables broke off. so i remember hearing that the mk1 vw rabbits have the same sunroof cables, so i found one in a junk yard and i grabbed the whole assembly, and i can attest that they DO in fact are the very same and work awesome. my sunroof now works like a charm.

future upgrades for over the winter are to get the interior put in, install a heater of some sort, looking to get a new set of wheels, trans upgrade, shorter rear shocks, front airdam, bigger master cylinder for the brakes, rear disk brakes, bigger front sway-bar, rear sway-bar, get a really good solid tune on the motor , lastly, drive the crap outta it, and lots of track days/ canyon/ mountain drives.

well as always we all wanna see the pics.

heres some photo shoots that ive had friends take of the car while i was driving around in grand junction. i trailerd the car up to junction and i drove it around town for a few weeks. im planning on relocating up to junction in a few months. so theirs a pic of my cool jeep comanche pulling my bug. the jeep in it self is also another whole project soon to start as well. lol. while in junction i stopped by KCW (Kustom Coach Werks) my old job back in the day. im sure most of you know who they are. but i stopped by to say hi to long time friend Franz, and he wanted a ride in it, so i gave him one. he was smiling ear to ear when he got out. John Jones (owner/ friend) as well came out from the shop and took a look at it and was quite impressed, and commented on how my use of other parts from other cars to make a cool car and keep it all looking like it all belonged their. so that was great to hear. its a good pic to show cause sitting in front of my car is a stock super beetle vert. you can really see the difference from my car vs a stock super beetle. the dulley is a recent purchase of John's. it lays body on 21 1/2" semi wheels. its quite rad to see it lay out on the bags. @JohnInKansas the 4 pot calipers in the front are from a early 80's volvo GL. they came with 4 pot calipers with solid disk rotors/non vented. its actually a really popular upgrade in the 914 world. so their was a guy that has a big volvo shop here and i went and bought some from him. At first i thought they would just bolt right on, but i was wrong....but that didnt stop me. i took the after market brake brackets off the car, parted the metal that holds the original calipers on and made a new piece out of 3/4 thick steel. i drilled and tapped the holes and away i went. only really down fall ia that unlike most modern 4 pot calipers, these had 2 brake lines that fed into them, so i then simply took 2 vw brake "T" fittings and used them to make one brake line then go into 2 then into the calipers. they work awesome. i do need a bigger master cylinder tho for more brake peddle. heres some pics of how i did it.

also to add to my post above, the rear hood hinges are from an orginal mini cooper. a friend gave them to me and they work awesome , since i had to cut out the orginal mounting panel out to make way for the intercooler.
