So an '87 Yugo is now sitting in my garage.
It is a bit dirty but nothing more then surface rust. The plan is to swap in a 1290 which I got from a guy who has had it sitting in his shop for $25. Add camshaft, header and Weber carb from a '74 X1/9. Lose weight where ever possible. For the suspension, the plan is X1/9 rear struts on the front and add 205/60-13 R-comps. Not sure about the rest of the suspension yet. Tomorrow I am going to clean and starting stripping it down.
This will be cool...I know NOTHING about Yugos, but I always enjoy an obscure grocery-getter build thread!
i hate you for many reasons. a) you own a car i want badly b) your making a challenge car out of said car c) ill think of something haha
Sweet project. Good luck.
Ill help if i can. I had a 1.5/1.1 swap Yugo
As far as paint, I am thinking about a Abarth styled paint job. Light grey with red stripes but instead of saying Abarth on the side I was thinking about putting Yugo like below. Then putting a Yugoslavian flag on the roof.

PM me your info and I will pass it onto my boss. He maybe interested in extra interior parts.

Only on this forum will you read something like this.
I know the OP already has a motor, and it's probably not challenge-budget friendly, but I've always thought it would be cool to drop one of the big superbike motors in one of those. Sure, the lack of torque would suck for a street car, but it would be a blast in a track-only challenger.
No one would expect the sound either.
I cleaned the car yesterday and got a massive amount of the grime of sitting outside for a number of years off. I have also noticed that Yugos seem to be made with the world's thinnest sheet metal.
Does anyone know how to get the rear wiper assembly off?

Pop the hatch, it unbolts from the inside.
In reply to 93EXCivic: The Yugo is made from some of the thickest sheet metal:( It is the hevest car in its class. As for how to. I dont know ill go look at it today. Or just take the arm off and add a wind up key.

I unbolted the one bolt on the inside but I couldn't figure out how to get it loose from the arm.
So I have cleaned the outside and I am stripping it out. I will add pictures at some point later. Does anyone know of a bolt in roll bar that will fit in a Yugo?
Saturday I picked up X1/9 suspension parts, a Weber 32 DMTRA carb and manifold, Delta camshaft and Isky valve springs, a set of Yoko A-0008 and a three Fiat wheels. Work on the car has been fairly limited because of my lungs doing their best to escape my body.

Speaking of, bring the shim kit and cam over and let's make this X1/9 a bit happier.
You going to pick up the floor jack today?
