Yeah I used that as a learning experience. When we got to the track Saturday morning madmrak351 and some others came to help. I was able to say "Hey can you check X for me while I work on this?" That was me understanding that I could trust them and putting them in charge of a problem that needed looking at while I focused on my own problem. I'll tell you that madmrak351 is a pitbull. Dude was like in it with me. We're under Suprang with gas leaking all over and hammering on the lock ring for the sender unit. I realize that we don't need two people on fire so I had to ask him to get out from under the car and to man the fire extinguisher.

Coming home Sunday Lil Stampie asked me if we were going to work on Suprang like we did the two weeks before. I told him oh hell no. In fact I told him I was going to take this weekend off and just relax.
Today's the start of my weekend so what did I do? Started working on Suprang. I wanted to figure out the alternator not charging as that caused a lot of extra unnecessary work at the Challenge.
Here's our subject a GM CS style alternator. According to Sean it's from a 75 GMC truck.
Didn't take much to get it out so that it could be tested.
Took it down to Advance. Tried to be patient while the dude was hooking it up. Failed a little and assisted him and it tested good. I phoned a friend (Dusterdb13) and had an exciting conversation about CS alternators. Now I have a plan on getting it going. The junkyard is having a 50% off sale this weekend so I think I'll go grab some stuff.
Sure that's a CS? Looks like a 10SI or a 12SI to me. Don't think CS was invented until the 90's
Sorry, my inner pedantic is showing

You are correct SI. Sorry I slack at alternator naming.

The SI needs a little help to begin charging. This is the closest way to free of making it happen

That's pretty much what Michael told me except that he dumbed it down for me.

I didn't correct him when I got pics. A functional alternator was more important than dumping large amounts of arcane electric knowledge.
I also educated him on ammeter and their role in tbe untimely death of many mopars...
There is a CS series alt with a front cover that lets it bolt up to an old "big case" bracket like you have. Look for it on a very late 307 olds motor in a chevy wagon or caddy around 1990. You can use this cover in whatever CS series you buy. An auto electric shop may have one or can order it.
1989 buick 3800 should be the one. If i remember correctly

There's an 89 Reatta in the yard. Might grab it because I do stuff like that and never use it.
Why not one for a 302? Wouldn't that just bolt on? Or is it's factory location blocked?

Stampie has an almost pathological need to not work on and to hate on Fords. Its his one downfall I've been able to find.

Because that's how Sean did it. I think he had a parts 75 Chevy truck that he grabbed stuff from as needed.
Hit the junkyard today for the sale. Didn't find much but I did get 8 Bosch spark plug wires for $9.20. That'll save $16ish from the budget. I also grabbed a LS battery cable including the jump terminal and bracket for $3.88. I'll use that to tie in the alternator.

I have at least one of the big case CS alternators here brand new in 90-91 fleetwood brougham fitment, so if you can leave it alone for a few weeks it can follow you home for cheap

I'll probably grab it if it's cheap but right now this alternator is good and it's not like I need a high amp alternator.

I mean, maybe not. However the wiring in the vehicle is, on average 54 years old. It'll have all sorts of corrosion and whatnot. Having a bigger alternator helped my truck

Lol the wiring is anywhere from 57 years old to brand new and some 47 year old and 40 year old thrown in the middle. I'm planning on rewiring most of it. I have a free body harness from the old Q45 so that'll fix the questionable stuff.

Seven weeks ago today Suprang broke down mid course at the Challenge. Today we fixed it. Somewhat.
Here's how we left off.
I started putting the new sending unit in but someone got antsy and insisted that they try.
He got it in and the ring on 99%. I got the last few hammer blows in and inspected it.
Put the hose on and 5 gallons of gas in it. No leaks. Cranked over a bit until we got gas to the filter up front and then she started right up.
That squeal you hear is the alternator not spinning. The belt turns. Not sure if alternator seized up or I didn't get it right when I put it back on. We'll still take today as a win.

Spent a few days trying to find my receipt for the fuel sender. Couldn't find where I bought it at all. Finally today I realized I got it off Amazon.
Damn I can't get it readable. I'll work on it tomorrow.

Well we didn't run in the Challenge this year. I came down with something Wednesday night that wasn't pretty. I had the brakes done other than bleeding and just needed to tie in the alternator so that we didn't have to run around all crazy like we did last year.
This morning I started looking at the alternator and decided that I needed to rewire the car. Would have been fine in a pinch to get ready for the Challenge but now that we have 8 months let's do it better. I ordered a fuse box and some relays. I started pulling the headlights but a couple of screws needed soaking. I have a feeling I'll rip out most of the old wiring and go with new. No pictures because I suck.

I suck at taking pictures while working on cars, too. My time is usually so limited I'm just laser focused on what needs done. I think taking pictures and documenting a build in-depth is a skill I don't have.
