I want to know why it's been parked a while, as well as definition of "a while."
N54 so all associated N54 issues.
BMW Automatic, so all associated "lifetime fill" ATF issues.
BMW AWD, so all associated BMW AWD issues.
still, that's a good price for a boosted AWD E61. I'd love to have one.
I think a conversation with the seller would clear up a lot of ifs or help negotiate a lower price.
It's about 6 miles from where I work so if anyone is curious I could put eyes on it and hopefully give it a listen.
I own a 2008 E61 535xi wagon....granted, I got it with another 30k miles than that one but I've had to do the following:
turbo wastegates (flapper valves were worn, did the weld-in kit and ALL the work you do while you have the subframe out to get to the turbos)
all transfer case seals and mount bushings
all 4 struts (shocks? whatever the correct term is)
rear main seal....ugh.
valve cover (and gasket)
oil pan gasket
starter
spark plugs, injectors (2 were leaking), coils
LPFP and sending unit
OFHG
when it's running/happy it's great for cruising at 85mph all day but....I'm honestly not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. YMMV, this is my first BMW but I've always liked them.
5 series of that era are notoriously problematic and needy, great drive and a labor of love. Add in a pile of miles and questionable or unknown history - no thanks. Rather have the N52

Yeaaaahh after owning a BMW with a lack of maintenance beyond oil, I can't recommend it unless you really love it. At least the body/paint looks decent.
Ok fine. I'll ask about the degree of deferred maintenance, why it was parked and for how long.
How do we feel about this BMW?
Extremely costly to run and maintenance heavy. The hatch seals go bad and leak water, right onto all the DME's down there. Turbo issues, fuel pump issues, fuel injection issues, transmission issues. I love German cars and this is one I'd stay far, far away from
I have a clean 2006 N52 325i with 137500mi I got running and driving. I don't like any awd BMWs as they are harder to work on and makes routine maintenance harder due to more stuff in the way.
Typically VCG is a headache, transmissions can be problematic but you can always change the atf. My advice is never chase price, you can find better condition cars for a bit more.

My trusted indy shop says the N20 is "Pretty much the worst engine BMW made, outside of the N63"

Not convincing enough.
However I did look into the chain and guide replacement procedure. Motor up, oil pan off, valve cover off, $200 special tool, WORRRRRRK, flip it and reverse it.
This N20 is either a ticking time bomb or has been treated with care to make it over 200k with our dying.

As the owner of said BMW, and a full disclosure kind of guy, I can tell you that the owner prior to me who had the car for several years spared no maintenance expense. If it looked, felt, or smelled funny he took it to the dealer. See the spreadsheet in the post. I, on the other hand, did what it needed and nothing else. It got regular oil changes, brakes, and tires as needed, and I replaced a leaking valve cover. I am mechanically sympathetic and tend to get a lot of miles out of my cars. As noted in the original post, the timing chain guides looked good when I had the valve cover off, but that wasn't yesterday.
