I just saw this on the 986 forum and I'd do it if it was more local. 2001 S that has the engine and transmission removed. Challenge Car? I see plenty of recoup. Has a title.
Edit... I say "Roller" but wheels not in the price.

junkyard Passat 1.8T engine and gearbox placed in the middle with slightly added boost, wheel adapters and... done?
In reply to Piguin :
I've never really thought about dropping another VW drivetrain into a Boxster. Now I can't stop thinking about W8 powered Boxster carts... thank you

That's about 2 hours away from me.
Are there cheap wheels that will bolt up for transporting?

Stock bolt pattern is 5 x 130 and 16" is generally the smallest wheel size to clear the brakes. I wouldn't be surprised if the seller would have some cheaper ones you can use, old spare etc. I can usually find them on FB market at about $400 a set for the cheaper ones with some rash. eBay adapters?
Recent reply to my questions to the seller:
Yes I was doing that with the cooling system, bumpers, top and stock grey seats (not the black ones just sitting in there). I do have a set of sport wheels that have old track tires that can be put on to roll it out of there. This is all to get the tub out as if I took everything off I am sure I could make more on the parts and just send the tub to the scrappers, just trying to save some time and effort there cutting it up. Not looking to reinstall everything but do have all the parts and bolts to put it back together for someone once rolled out. Thanks for the cross post.
That $2000 challenge looks like a fun time.

If we're pissing people off let's go all the way and skip the 1.8 for some flavor of 1.9 TDi. I'm very grateful this is very far away.

This Is The World's First Turbodiesel Porsche 911 in a way its already been done.
People swap Audi V8s into these.
But if an Audi V8 fits, a 2.7t fits even better-er and they are really cheap to buy used.
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
The Boxster shell I have now I'm torn between a VW 4.2l V8 or 1.8t engine. The person that owned it before me was going to do a 2.7t swap.
310hp and not too much to make more, or about 225hp to start but could build up to 400+
