I don't know the newer volvos at all, but isn't the XC90 a transvers engine? Still a good deal; just being curious

I would assume so as well, but if it is transverse, it adds a whole 'nother level of fabrication, as compared to say, a (302) 5.0 in a 960.
I'm sure it's possible to RWD swap an XC90. The fact that they were already AWD probably helps a bit. But they are also already v8 in a lot of cases, and unless you are trying to drift one the awd 4.4 v8 model is already reasonably quick (15 sec 1/4, anyway) and can sound awesome.

you know, I am waiting to see when the first person shows up to the challenge in a mid-size S/CUV with a big motor and AWD but they've chopped the suspension and eliminated about 1500lbs of luxury from the interior.
Seems to me stuff like this or infinity FX, Acura MDX, etc, etc, could really make a compelling argument. Heck, many of them get blasted for being built on 'car platforms' so maybe the 'car' suspension just bolts back on!

Someone posted here a while back about a Cayenne someone had chopped the roof off of, and it was almost a revelation to me because i realized that if you took 1000 lbs out of my Cayenne S it would instantly become a fair rally car! I think it would also drop half a second in the 1/4 mile just by dropping down to car size/weight wheels and tires.

It doesn't help very much, it is a transverse floorpan. The steering is in the middle of where the transmission would be. And the engine bay is pretty short, too, you probably wouldn't be able to physically fit the engine between the firewall and bumper.
The rear diff would also be completely useless, it is something like 1.3:1 ratio and has a Haldex coupler that can only transmit 1000n-m of torque (assuming that's a five cylinder).
I mean, I guess if you really wanted to prove a point, you could get an industrial melon baller, flip the thing onto its roof, scoop out the suspension, firewall, floor, and interior, then build from scratch. Probably better off just finding a decent Explorer.
