Optimistic price

I remember when 500 for both was the going price.  Wonder how rusty the suspension under the battery tray is.

I often check FB for 914s. These have been posted for a long time!

Amazingly the 914's are bringing really good money.  A friend does porsche restoration and was absolutely floored at how little 914 7k bought these days.  It used to buybmost anything out there that wasn't a 6.

Its starting to get frustrating to me.  Dad has one that needs restoring and I need a parts car or two.

No rust on Dad's at least, thankfully.  Getting the engine done is gonna be a bear, though.

You should say very little rust. These were rusting on the ship on their way. There are panels that paint can't reach. Even desert cars have some rust. But yeah and the 914 was a VW/Porsche in Europe which more accurately reflects what they are. Much rather have a Europa or a X19, having owned a 914 and driven all 3.

They are an acquired taste.  And the grit of rust does nothing to help.  I had a bunch of them, and drove the fiat, toyota, pontiac and lotus mittlemotors too.  Each one had good points and bad, for a long time they could be bought for a few grand and kept running cheap.  Wish I could do that today, would keep it until I couldn't drive anymore.  Still keep a couple titles and VIN plates just in case.

I found a great one here a while back, was a FB poorly worded ad and an unresponsive  seller. Most people give up when they don't get a response, but I stuck with it. Got a solid survivor 1972 with no repairs, just a small 1 inch hole in the hell hole area, compete with a ton of spares for $1,600. Car had been sitting in his mother's garage since the late 80's. I sold off all the parts I did not need and am basically using the shell to build my dream 914. Currently have a 911 front and rear suspension, brakes and steering system, 911 2.7 S engine, 914/6 headers, exhaust, sheet metal, oil tank, body reinforcement kit , steel m271 flares and a set of 7 and 8 inch 911/930 Turbo Fuchs for the car. Car was poorly painted black but will be restored back to the original Gemini Blue Metallic.

The car came with a rebuilt 2.0 engine that I was not going to use, so I ended up buying a car that needed an engine to resell and then use to fund the above. That car is almost complete, turned out really nice. Car had a 5 lug conversion and 914/6 fuchs so will be a great ride.

So they are out there, but definitely hard to find deals on these cars. Too many like the original post with major rust and "optimistic" pricing. 

Dang, nicely done.  I've been looking for a cheaper 914 to play around with but they are typically rusted out way more than I want to deal with.  

I plan to strip the shell, have the entire body blasted and then install the metal flares and patch the rust. But not often do you find a $1,600 914 with a hell hole this clean. I'll cut out the areas  where they welded in "patches" and put in fresh metal and this will be as clean as factory. Inner fender, console and the longs are as clean as can be!

So you found a 2nd car that was good enough to install  4 cyl. Now that's lucky! Do you play the lottery?

Not only lucky, but it was 20 minutes from my house! 2nd car needed more work than I expected, but ultimately it was overall a good car and will fund a few projects such as getting my 6 cylinder car painted.

You do have some impressive luck or superhuman car hunting skills.  I still look but the prices are beyond belief.  What broke my heart was the 73 2.0 I spent 5 years restoring then sold/traded to a guy.  He kept in touch for 15 years, when the engine broke a valve.  After that I didn't hear from him.  On a whim I called and got his story of woe.  Auto Atlanta built a motor for him which blew up in a month.  He was disgusted and sold it for dirt.  Wish I was looking that week, would have bought it in a minute.  I still look every time I see a yellow 914 locally, someday if one with a matching yellow painted roof goes by I will follow it.
