In reading replies, make sure to be aware of the difference in "AWD" and " 4x4." If you need a true off road, a conversion would be best (diy or other) if you just want traction on "normal" roads, gm AWD vans are nice.

How about a "well-used" Mercedes Sprinter (like this one https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/WD3PF3CC5FP159692)?
I know that they're available in 4wd as this platform seems to be the darling of the well-heeled overland crowd... They also make a passenger version (a friend with a big family has one to haul around all the kids and their friends)
The problem with the sprinters is a max towing capacity of 7500 lbs.
and I've heard the awd vans might have some weak spots? Plus I certainly rarely if ever need awd so running it full time is a waste of fuel for me. A conversion is what I'd want. Or just 2wd and convert later.
