Looking for a sub 5K rear wheel drive rallycross car in or near Florida.. Not looking to win just looking to participate.  Will consider just about anything but would prefer Miata or MR2. I do not plan to drive it on the street, so if some things don't work thats OK.

Thanks

"most documented wins by any rallycross car in the nation?" That's quite a boast. Wonder how many that is.

I have around 35 in mine, and I personally know at least five people that have me beat... A few of them are on this very forum.

Our MR class usually has 15 to 20 cars so even the class winner for the season usually only has two or three event wins lol

I have quite a few documented wins in my Miata. And it looks a whole lot better than that one. Bet it's worth $8k. Also documented national championship win and multiple national championship trophies. Maybe it's time to sell. cheeky

In reply to BlackSweeper :

Check out the All Florida Rally group on Facebook.  I don't know if anyone is selling right now but people tend to appear out of the woodwork when asked.  The FIRM sells their older cars about once a year but I don't think they have any RWD cars for sale this year.

$5K will buy you a lot of car if you don't care whether the AC works.  You have your choice of any model of e30 or e36 BMW, NA/NB/NC Miatas, 1st and 2nd gen MR2s.  If you want to do some work, there is a nearly running e36 M3 owned by one of the stage rally guys in budget as well.  I would just buy a stock car and not worry about mods.  5 years in, I am still on OEM+ style suspension on my Prepared RWD car.

We run at two venues in central Florida.  The St Lucie overflow lot is pretty hard on cars but has the potential of 90 second courses.  There are big chunks of rock and concrete mixed in with the soil.  This means a weld-on skid plate for E36 BMWs due to the location of underbody braces.  You could probably get away with no skid plate if you always had a trailer or carried spare tie rods with you.  The skidpad at The FIRM is smooth, flat, and more closely resembles a low grip autocross.  The fast guys generally run summer tires or 200TW tires and reconnect sway bars on this surface.  Risk to the car is almost zero.

Modified RWD is a pretty large group locally as it has swallowed all of Prepared.  That means you don't need to worry about keeping all of the interior panels for class eligibility reasons.

I would try to pick something up with a limited slip diff.  Getting stuck in sugar stand in paddock or at the start is the most annoying thing in the world.

Allow extra time to get snow tires shipped to Florida.  Tire Rack called me three times before shipping them the last time I ordered them.

The first event of the year is in St Lucie on the weekend of January 30 followed by The FIRM on February 13.  There is an event put on by The FIRM on February 27 which can best be described as a rally sprint with no safety requirements.  It will be good fun if you have some restraint.

Here is a 04 Miata being parted out since it went for a hurricane swim. https://panamacity.craigslist.org/pts/d/port-saint-joe-2004-mazda-miata-part-out/7252322058.html

Cheapest miata you can find,  since a hardtop will run about $1500, take that into account with total purchase cost. Disconnect rear sway  bar, put winter tires on it, and start smiling.

I just went down the same route, it's way too much fun. Our region is the same way in that for RWD its either SR or MR, not many cars run in PR.

I'm going to suggest a different direction, 318ti, put it on a diet, swap in a z3 steering rack.

When you start wanting more performance, change out the rear end for something with  better gear ratios and a limited slip. Then when ability calls for it, engine upgrade time.
