My father bought a new to him 1968 karmann ghia, and we cannot figure out why there is a 3-4" hole underneath the front bumper. The PO painted the car, and taped over the hole to reduce overspray, but the PO had no idea either as to the purpose of the hole.

I've seen pictures of other cars online that also have this hole, though.

The shift rod comes out through there.

Thank you! Yeah, the one on this car is gone. So I need to figure out where to find another one.

I never knew why that's was there. Assumed it was just for the horns.

Wrong end of the car, but VW did equip early bugs and buses with hand cranks. I think it was option on the Thing.

I believe it's for the horns. My stock horns are mounted right behind that hole.

May we also consult you for random Jack O'Lantern questions too?

That oval hole is originally fitted with a black rubber dual "bellows" that leads from both horns to the outside of the front luggage compartment.

The rubber piece looks a great deal like a tiny pair of black rubber shorts and serves to allow the horns to be heard and keep the water and debris out of the spare tire well.

A while lot of the time this rubber piece is missing, water/snow/debris enters the spare tire bay and begins to rot and rust the metal very badly.

Not uncommon at all.
