Got this car from my mom always been maintained.hass 80,000 miles on it.wondering when is best time to replace timing chain to be safe.dont want to mess up engine.little motor has some power.jump to 6,000 rpms in a sec.was hesitant to buy because didnt have the 3.5.has a slight ticK sounds like in lower part by timing chain.go's away as soon as hitting gas.very slight tick.

Was curios that maybe chain strected or pully bad.heard in the 2004 and below there was a problem with tensioner.hope its nothing bad.my mom said it always had that tick from 30,000 miles.going to try different oil maybe a little thicker.any suggestions?

And also is waterpump right there with chain? I know if so probly do both.

I really dont want to chance chain to 125,000 with these ecotech motors.any suggestions be great.girlfriends car so be taking to chevy to get done.probly be 1,000.

This question might be better suited for the GRM board, so I'll move it there for you.

In high school, I drove my parents' 1978 Malibu Classic. It was awesome.

It's my understanding that the GM 60 degree pushrod V8s typically have the chain last the life of the engine. There is a sort of anti-rattle "damper" / chain guide (it's not a true tensioner) inside the chain that I could see being worn out. Probably won't do anything more than make noise if it fails, though.

The water pump is out in front of the chain, run off the serpentine belt.
