Installing my remote system soon.

Look at the size increase I can now run.

Wow........that is a lot bigger!! How much more oil would you have to run with that system?

Stock is 4.6.

With the cooler and larger filter I guess I should up that a bit

Nice!

Eventually, I'll probably do the same mod on my '78 Spit 6 (has a Mk I engine), although the stock canister filter hasn't annoyed me yet...

In my case the spin on + oil cooler rig + steering column + brake setup put it over the top.

In order to remove the filter, I have to disconnect the cooler lines at the stat because I can't access them on the spin on.

Bend everything under the column which puts stress on the lines for no good reason.

So with the remote I will weld a mount up front and hang the filter in a protected area, but make sure I can drain it with ease. See link.

http://www.gt6.ca/08/1210/index.html

I will still have to loosen off the spin on to aid draining and will have to drop the line off the cooler, but it should still be an easier operation.

With a covering of fins that would be an effective oil cooler by itself.

Yep, which could be a bad thing in the later months.

I will wait and see.

If a large filter is in a position to drain out while the engine is off, it just adds to the time until the bearings get full oil pressure, in that case, a smaller filter is better.

K&N has an anti drain valve.

And I meant I will locate it where when I do drain it won't flow all over the frame.

True... I don't know if I'll add a cooler... I've had the car out in 100 degree days and it doesn't seem to run hot.

I've been drooling over the aluminum radiator Tim had made for the Group 44 GT6... but mainly because I'd like to drop as much weight off the front of the car as possible... I'd do front and rear alloy engine plates for the same reason.

Oh you could go crazy trying to cut the front end weight on the car, but then you'd might as well go buy a Lotus. It'd be cheaper then buying up all the various parts. :)

I got the cooler for free so I run it.

I have a spare non-cooler spin on, so if I notice the oil is too cool I can remove it, but with the stat oil won't flow to the cooler unless it gets good and hot.

No doubt... I have no intentions of ripping the drivetrain apart just to install allow plates... but if I'm in there for some other reason... all bets are off...

Plus, when you eventually see the stereo I plan to put in this car... you'll know overall weight savings isn't high on the list of priorities... I'd just like to get some of that weight out of the nose.

And sadly, I could buy a PRI engine for Goblin and still be well under the cost of a Lotus...

Stereo? Ok I have 2 12volt computer speakers and an iPod... Light weight :)

Something about hearing the 6 howl is far too good to miss.

And for the love of the manufacture (been told to stop using god) don't buy a PRI built your own.

I looked at the plates, but really you don't save that much.

PRI was used as an $$$$ example... If I do anything to the engine, I'll build it myself (within reason) and then "Teglerize" it...

Sadly, I've become spoiled by the stereos in my modern cars... and want to create something similar in the Spitfire... whether or not I'll be successful remains to be seen... but I hope to find out before Carlisle...

My buddy has a nice set up in his. Decent amp and speakers are in the rear wing panels.

Prob in the GT6 is where do you put 1/2 the kit. I use the cargo area.

I leave the fancy stereo stuff to my Mazda Speed Protege. :)

That's my complaint about the set-up my g/f put in her Spit. Big, honkin' 6x9 speaker boxes on the rear deck... leaving little room for "stuff" and the speakers get half buried when the top is down...

My plan: USB/MP3/CD head unit; 5.25" speakers recessed into the side panels behind the seats; component speakers in the door panels (which may require me to convert to power windows for clearance); powered sub in the left side of the boot; amp for speakers on the right side.

Yep... 7 speakers in a Spitfire... I told you it would be silly. Unlike my g/f, I have no qualms about cutting interior panels... Hopefully it'll work.

Oddly enough, due to how the head unit in newer VW's is integrated into the body computer, my upgrade otpions there are limited.

Blah too much weight.

I agree a spit is easier to do decent sound in. You can mount the amp in the boot.

Not so many places to hide stuff in the GT6.

My system works well enough for my needs. Plus it can be removed. Velco rocks.

If weight was that important to me, I wouldn't have bought a Spit6... with an o/d trans... and 3.27 gears... it'll scoot well enough (I even plan to try to auto-x at Carlisle this year), but where it's happiest is just cruising at speed wit hthe top down...

And for that, I want a stereo I can hear.
