We used to have a Thing when I was younger, it was actually fun to drive, and would places a Jeep couldn't get to. The front window folded flat, the doors could be removed, and you could hose it out when you were done. It was also extremely tough and great for towing behind the motorhome. The side curtain thing isn't that big of deal, unless someone had knotted up their bag and it was pouring down rain! They slip in and are done, nothing to them. I'd have another in a minute, assuming you can find one. People tend to keep them, and they are fairly rare.

Beetle goodness in Klublewagon package, what's not to like!

I like KaptKaos' choices. My wife wanted an early Corvair. I hated the idea and got one. Now it is one of my favorite cars, as you can genuinely put 4-5 people in it, which isn't possible with most of my cars. Depending on budget and tastes, you might want to lean towards a modern classic. They are so drivable. I just picked up a 1990 M3 and would drive it to Alaska if need be. It is that nice, quiet and fuel efficient.

I have been watching the M3 as prices go down. They are a bit more distinctive than the Miata. Maybe less common is a better way to put it.
