I recently purchased a 2002 24 ft RV and we're trying to get info on something fun we can tow 4 down behind it. Lots on info on newer cars but vintage rides not so much. I know VW's can, old CJ's can, if stopped and run for 5 minutes every 2 hundred miles, but what other interesting, but not too expensive classics can be towed? We're selling our Lotus Elan very soon so will have some cash, but don't want to spend all of that money on something else. What about a BMW 2002, Volvo 122, etc.? Need something that seats more than 2, and can fit a medium size dog. Jeeps, Scouts, and other 4WD or AWD cars are also a possibility. Maybe an older but interesting Subaru would work. Not too picky on what it is as long as it's interesting, reliable, and fun to drive when not being towed.

The Samurai, Tracker, Sidekick were the industry standard for a long time. They even make a driveshaft disconnect so you didn't have to stop every 200 miles. I prefer the Samurai, but I'm a little strange. That's what will be going behind SanFord when it leaves the yard.

Saturn's, if I recall correctly. They don't even show the miles on the odometer, again, if I recall correctly.

Edit: Doh, you said CLASSIC!

I think I might have it. Not exactly vintage, but an early (bugeye) Subaru WRX wagon! Plenty of upgrades available, classic Subaru, AWD for the snow when not being towed, and I personally love the look. Now just need to find a 5 speed, head gaskets replaced, and clean. Any color will do, but yellow gets by juices flowing. Look for my Elan on eBay soon.

I've heard of some Jeep people putting manual hubs on the rear axle so you can tow them with the drivetrain not moving at all.

You'll need to log in to post.
