Another great solution (did you see what I did there?) is DeoxIt D5S-6 cleaner.  A can should be included with the sale of any classic car!  Spray it into any connector or switch, operate it a few times, spray again.  It does exactly what the name says. 

I also use a piloted spot-weld cutter (looks like a 3/8" hole saw) to clean around ground screw holes.  Run it slowly and rock it a little bit and it will leave bright metal all around. Put a dab of grease on it, a star lock washer between the surface and the lug and it's good to go.

I have a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner in the garage. Useful for cleaning guitar equipment, too.
