Tim and Margie are running Going to the Sun this week in the Shelby, and that got me thinking: What's your idea car for a long-distance rally or tour?Hate to default to my usual, but my 911 would probably do it for me.

I'll go along with that.

Volvo 1800ES. I really enjoyed the long trips we did with that car. Granted, a bit more HP, air conditioning and cruise control would have been nice at times, but for gobbling up large patches of road, that car does it with style, comfort and reasonable efficiency. It's one of the main reasons I want to restore my own ES. I miss driving that car.

Triumph TR8 makes for a comfy long distance cruiser and had a great rally record.

Something big and comfortable sounds like a good fit if it's long distance highway cruising. I'd want to go with either a well optioned '68 Dodge Charger, or a Mercedes Fintail.

Not these specific cars, but anyone from the same neighborhood would be a hoot.

Unlee of course, your final Rallye destination is Bizzarro World.

We've always enjoyed doing road rallies and economy runs in the Corvair. They are comfortable enough to drive long distances, but sporty enough to have fun with the corners.

My all time favorite rally car was the one I'm leaning on in this old picture. My much loved and much improved '71 Datsun 240Z. It had great power, lot's of room, good handling, and very importantly, great brakes.

Had the rally competition in the this part of the country not dried up, I probably would still own it.

I was with the "Mad Scientist" until I read Rupert's post.

Put my vote in for the 240z: comfortable enough that it won't hurt your butt, room enough to avoid leg cramps, sporty, quick, reliable, and agile.

WOW! As in "Do you want to WOW them now?" The October R&T has an ad for a '52 Bentley Mark VI. It is described as a marvelous tour and rally car for $29,500.

A part of me, the heart, certainly agrees. But at my age I also listen to my head. My head and real world experience says with airplanes, big boats, & old British cars the cheapest phase of the ownership experience is the purchase phase.

Been there, been stung by each of those!

I'll second the TR8. They were absolutely awesome rally cars in their day.
