So the new CM had a little blurb about the install of a Becker stereo into the Benz- plus some other nice details....
Which reminded me that the DIN stereo I put into my GTV, I've never liked. It used to have a Blaupunkt that looked correct. (and the stereo has failed).
There are some options out there-

http://www.antiqueautomobileradio.com/
http://www.retrosound.com/Default.asp
But most of them are geared more toward classic US cars.
So two things- any experience with those, or are there other selections...
Actually three- any contact information for Becker? That would go quite well in my GTV, too.
What's the definition of "modern inputs," and what's the budget?
I'd rather have a USB input to plug my iPhone into (instead of just an aux input), and Blutetooth would be really great, so I can make calls.
Budget is not defined until I know the options.
Oh bummer. My two favorites just have aux i think.
Denon and Panasonic both make/made brushed metal face headunits that were pretty much timeless.
Panasonic CQ-TX5500
Panasonic CQ-VX5500
Denon DCT-A100. (Quite a few variations of this.)
Maybe not true retro in a way that they look like they're from the 50s, but definitely classy.

By 'DIN' do you mean a standard full width slot or a 2-post? I installed a Ebay soruced unit in the ex's 1800ES that looks pretty darned close to original after I tweaked it to fit the OE radio knobs and face plate:
Be aware that many of the USB ports on these types of stereos don't really communicate with an iPhone. So far, the ones I've seen are essentially MP3 ports for a thumb-drive. at least that's how this one is. She usually uses the Aux input for Pandora, Audiobooks or MP3's on her phone while driving.
I don't have the magazines here at work, but I've seen adverts for a new totally hidden stereo that communicates through smart phones via bluetooth. Everything built into the unit: receiver, amp, everything. You OE dash unit remains in place, but isn't connected.
Oh... and that TX-5500 is freakin' AWESOME!
In reply to Swank Force One:
Thanks, but those would look better in our former 84 626, and not a '73 Alfa.
In reply to Ian F:
I would like the two post look, but I have a DIN hole. I know of adaptors that will use the DIN set up I have with an older radio.
There are a couple of two posts that work with an iPhone- like this one- http://www.retrosound.com/product-p/m2-unadorned.htm
Then it's a matter of getting the right set up that looks good (which is pretty easy with them).
But I was also interested in the Becker that CM put into the Benz (just to get more info on the setup they used), and if there are any other possibilities that I'm missing.
And this VW "version" looks just like the one you got http://www.casmfg.com/VW%201968-85%20USA-230.htm
Actualy, related to the VW I just posted is this one- a higher version of it http://www.casmfg.com/VW%201968-85%20USA-630.htm

It's similar - actually has "Porsche 356" written on the label. Bearing in mind, we installed the one in the ES over 5 years ago. iPod compatible stuff does seem more common now. I don't have an iPhone, so I don't really pay attention to that market.
