It's called an Alken D2.
Home safe and sound–stopped for gas just before home.
So good seeing everyone, and we’ll have to do it again next year.
And my trunk after the weekend–plus, behind the front seats, a small suitcase, a pair of Vans, another camera bag, a few caps, assorted water bottles and my skateboard.
Sorry for the vertical, but the post-Amelia office.
The bike didn’t come to Amelia, but as that was a game time decision after bringing it down from our loft.
Dog for scale.
And making progress this evening: two zipped-up camera bags means batteries are charged, SD cards are downloaded, and everything’s back where it belongs.
Why two bags? I have shot Canon for 40 years, and that’s what I use for car stuff. So one bag has a 7D MkII, 7D backup, lenses, etc.
But for fun/non-work, I use Fujifilm. A few years ago, a friend suggested the Fujis as they feel like film cameras. Even though I planned on shooting Canon all weekend, my wife helped cover the concours on Sunday. As a backup, I asked her to grab my Fuji bag before coming up for the day; if she needed a piece of Canon gear/we got in some kind of jam, I could then move to Fuji. I know, TMI. And, yes, I was a Boy Scout.
Both camera bags are from Shadow Conspiracy. They specialize in BMX parts and gear but also make a killer camera bag. The one on the right is coming up on eight years old.
Getting things back together from Amelia.
At the last minute I decided that, perhaps, I didn’t need to have a BMX bike out in the rain all weekend.
So, Plan B: an ’80s-approrpriate, 10x30 skateboard in the Porsche instead.
The white and pink one is legit from the ’80s. I bought it at our local skate shop when I was in high school.
The black and blue one, the one that went to Amelia, is a modern board built to vintage specs.
Both boards have been signed by the members of Agent Orange–the band that has defined the skate punk scene since the late ’70s–while Mike Palm, singer/guitarist and founding member, skated the black and blue one before a show.

This is me! And what I didn't realize until after I got home on Sunday night is that my car is in the March 2024 issue that they handed out! On the Table of Contents page, and then as the article cover photo for Radical Rides on page 14! I bet the magazine didn't even know my car was at the show and is featured in this months magazine! 😁

That’s you! I wondered if it was the same car. At the same time, between photos, video, answering questions and shaking babies, I was running around like crazy that day.
The car looks awesome, and thank you for joining us.

Alkens were made in Gardena , California and on a stock VW chassis ,
I had one years ago that I found in Northern California ,

It looked cool, and this one was all period correct. Love how it repurposes the stock headlights.

Joined Classic Motorsports just to reach out to you about your Alken! This thread came up on one of my searches for information. My dad restored and owns the blue one pictured above. We love learning more about them and their different histories. Currently five bodies are known to survive with two others rumored to exist. Additionally two more Alkens pictured in vintage photos have not yet resurfaced! I'd love to find another to restore myself. Do you have any photos of yours or know where it ended up? Were there any specific custom touches or modifications? If yours turns out to be an additional car that would account for a 10th body! Here's a link to my dad's restoration thread on the samba. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=539063
