Hi everyone,

My wife, daughter and I just went to pick up a 72 volvo 142s 4 speed manual (no overdrive :( we purchased on ebay for $2,000. Car has done 94,000 miles and motor seems in good nick.

Car is much better than expected. Everything works except the glove box light. Runs really well.

Drove for 90 mile today and on highway no verheating better than expected power actually really nice driver. Some very minor rust issues but nothing major.

Anyway can people please advise what engine and gearbox oils I should use (summer gets 35-40 celcious, winter low 20's celcious). Should I stick with mineral based or go synthetic?

There is so much for me to learn regarding points etc, never had to deal with any of this stuff before (car is older than me). Heres some pics.

Lovely! Nice score. N.S.W plates? I'm in Perth.

I felt a slight pang of disappointment for a second there, when I thought you'd bought the one I've been eyeing off.

Certainly is tempting...

BTW, you've seen the Classic Motorsports project 142, right? http://classicmotorsports.net/project-cars/1969-volvo-142/

Project 142

G'day Luke,

Yeah seen the project car. Theres some nice 142 projects around. Hears an older one but very nice.

That one in perth doesn't look bad at all!

I totally understand why there are volvo lover around, such well built quality car. Mine does not have a single rattle. Took the door trim off tonight still so many clips not broken etc.

I have not seen a 142 for sale in NSW in the 8 odd months I have been looking for a car. Nearly bought a 144 from Melboune but the later plasticy model, glad I missed out.

Theres another 142 auto in melbourne for sale but around $4K and auto.

Good luck Luke, let us know if you buy the one on gumtree.

Engine: standard dino oil. We use 20w50 in our U.S.-spec B20F with over 200K miles on it, but 10w40 is fine as well. The oil & filter gets changed once a year, regardless of miles, but every 3K is standard for these engines. Ours leaks/burns enough that it probably gets 'changed' twice a year...

Transmission: Assuming it has a M41 with a Laycock J-Type overdrive, there is much debate about this subject. We use straight 30W HD (non-detergent) motor oil based on the recommendation of a O/D rebuilder we know, but others (especially Irv Gordon of 2.9M mile 1800 fame) use 75w90 gear oil.

volvo is really built to last. the only problem is i cannot afford to buy new models of volvo.lol so i will just maintain my old car and keep it running as long as i can. auto parts site are everywhere so why fear buying a second hand volvo?

This car is a formal car. But from long since it is giving the best quality. I think it will make you happy.
