The Canadian-American challenge, more commonly known as Can-Am, produced some of the fastest and most advanced race cars of the time, including the Chaparral 2J, the McLaren M8D and the Porsche 908.

I was racing at Monterey in the 1980s and was standing at the pit wall when the Canam cars (mostly Mclarens and Lolas) fired up where they were lined up just on the other side of the wall.  The vibration carried enough dBs to make you chest vibrate in sympathy. And it wasn't the manic roar you get at the drag strip - it seemed much more purposeful than that...
