Had a Protege5 new. Moderately underpowered, but really quite fun and practical.

Yeah, the ser spec V's are very heavy as well. Have you considered an audi, volvo or saab? All 3 have good size interiors. Older lexus's and infiniti's can be had for cheap as well. Or do you NEED a compact car.

I remember spec'ing out a spec V on the nissan site when they came out, seemed like the brembo option/package canceled out ABS, was this true for all the years?...

I don't know about all years but I know that's true for the 2005s.

Huh? My 2002 V was 2800 lbs. Considering I was cross shopping a mini cooper S and an SVT focus at the time I thought it was very similar in weight for a car that was larger than either of my other choices.
IIRC the Brembo option didn't show up until 2004 when they go uglier.
does anyone know if the precat-less header has a CARB number? (living in a smog area means inspections!) and does it also fit the 1.8L motor or just the 2.5L? and who makes it?
i think the 2.5 motor makes the math not work for getting one. my commute isnt that long so the gas milage has to be at least 22MPG and the insurance has to be the same as my current DD to make the car addition work, money wise. insurance and the reduced milage difference for the bigger motor pretty much strikes out the spec v model.
good call on the protege though. i have found a couple of those worth looking at too. mostly late 90's models but i found a few with manual transmissions and decent interiors.
thanks for all the great info!
