I am looking at one that needs a new engine. At this moment I would assume a timing belt let go. 1.8t with a 5 speed for 750.00. Is there any thing else to look for and is that too much?

Argh. Is that a B5 or B6 chassis?
If you live where things rust, the B5's rear shock tower/upper control arm mount likes to rust out. Really the only bad thing about the chassis that I've seen. It's EXPENSIVE though, like $1k/side to fix if you can't get used parts. Which you probably can't, because it's a common issue. But the chassis is worth it because the car itself doesn't rust at all, and that is worth its weight in gold if you live where things rust.
If it's a low oil pressure problem, drop the pan and replace the oil pickup, which is probably full of chunks of the last two or three dipstick tubes ("funnel"s) that broke up. Have done a few. Amazing how the engines can build oil pressure again once the oil pump is able to actually get oil
If it dropped a timing belt... hoo boy. Valves is EXPENSIVE. IIRC $20 a pop and a lost belt will eat all eight exhausts and at least four of the intakes. But still, even if it runs $2k to put it back together (it probably won't be that much) then it's still way worth it. In my opinion this is one of the finest cars made in recent times.
B6's are better than B5's.
That being said, you have a unpopular car on the used market, due to repair costs with a lunched engine. IMO - $500 car at best.
You will have to find a 1.8T from another Audi or Passat. The Golf and Jetta transverse motors are different.
And there are different 1.8T's. Check your engine code and trans code. Engine from an auto car may not work in a manual. They need to match. Look over the crankcase vent tubing, its brittle and may need replacement.
If its set up the same way as my Passat is, the engine code is in the spare tire well in a list of numbers. It will be something like, "AWM, AMB, etc."
