Friend of SWMBO has 07 Sonata 4 cylinder manual trans and there seems to be a high pitched whiney noise when it is shifted into 2nd through 4th (on colder days). Any insight on this? Is this a case of maybe just flushing and changing the manual trans fluid? Clutch play is okay..

Change the fluid and look for metal and go from there.

Can probably limp it along for a while with some better fluid like Redline MTL.  Once it starts popping out of gear on accel and decel one of the bearings is past it and its new gearbox time.

Sounds like you have a bearing dying on a shaft that is common to those three gears.  When power passes through it, it whines.

Agreed on the drain and refill.  Do the research on the cst (viscosity) of the OEM spec fluid and choose a good synthetic that is about one point higher cst and see how it does.  For instance, the Mercon V spec'd for my M5od is around 12cst, so I chose Royal Purple Synchromax which is 12.7cst if I recall correctly.  My problem was a synchro issue.

Keep in mind that if it "fixes" anything, it's just a mask.  Don't go too thick or you'll likely blow past synchros and make it like shifting molasses.

I think they said about 120k on the car. She said that previous owners maintained it pretty well.
