Hey,

I have an '08 'Rolla that seems to be acting wonky.

I was driving about 60 down a small hill, when the traffic in front slowed down slightly. I lifted off the gas, and did not use the brakes. The car downshifted one gear. When I got back on the throttle it shifted up to 3rd. It did this once yesterday.

The trans fluid was changed about a year ago. (Strictly precautionary as the car was new to me.) The car has about 110k miles. No CEL. I tried to use the code reader at Oreillys: the connector was wonky.

Has anybody seen this sort of issue? How concerned should I be?

Thanks,

Rog

More fun....

Didja know that 08 Corollas have two OBD connectors under the dash? You do now.

The hot connector showed NO Engine/Trans codes. The Toyota forum is not much help.

More updates to follow....hopefully happy updates.

Thanks,

Rog

My brother in law has an older rav4 although I don't know the exact year. He was having some weird shifting problems and we (actually I) took the transmission ECU out and fixed some soldering on the board and it runs great now....could that be the same issue for you? Cost us $0 and the dealer wanted $800. He owe's me many frosty brews.

Used the code reader at Oriellys today...

No engine/trans codes.

Got more homework todo....

Thanks to Grover for the tip..!

Are you sure it's not intentional?

My car will downshift if you let off the throttle going downhill and the car doesn't decelerate. The controller monitors TPS rate of change and makes assumptions of driver intent based on that.

It's actually really slick. I don't miss doing it myself at all, the controller does everything I would want to do when I want to do it. For instance, if you are accelerating firmly and then snap off the throttle, the trans will hold whatever gear you're in, as it assumes you are cornering. (Not sophisticated enough to incorporate g/yaw sensors like newer ones do)

Hey,

Yeah, I do not know if I am over thinking this.... And I hope that I am.

Like I said, I have driven the car for almost 2 years and never noticed this behavior.

Thanks for the comments and I will keep you guys informed.
