This car is the same weight and has same power as the last Suzuki Swift, 12 years ago. Nobody in the US bought those either

The last Mirage I owned lost the passenger door in the driveway. Seriously, it fell right off when parked. The sheetmetal was so thin, the weight of the door pulled a section right off. Never again Mitsubishi.

This version of the EVO will not quite have the power numbers of the Lancer EVO, but it will be extremely powerful, given its puny specifications. Under the hood, we all expect to see a 1.5-liter three-banger engine that pumps out a respectful 150 horsepower, thanks to the help of a turbocharger. Where this new Evolution will make up ground is in the diet that Mitsubishi has this hatchback on. When it is all said and done, it is expected that Mitsubishi will have the Mirage weighing less than 2,000 lbs, giving it around a 12.5 pounds-per-horsepower rating, which is very respectable for its class.
One can only hope this doesn't cost a fortune.
I think I'd rather have a ~120hp "sport" model for $15k or less

Sales guy - "But its an EVO, that means its twice as expensive"
person - "WTF is a mirage?"
fanboi - "ZOMG EVO.......wait, wtf is this?"
I thought it was a Mazda 2 when i opened the link. Looks like another typical 4 dr hatch...cool, but nothing earth shattering.

We are documented in various magazines as having the worst roads. Plenty of idiot drivers, and their numbers multiply exponentially when it snows. The former mayor of Detroit is in prison along with many of his cronies. Any more questions? back to the car in question. I do like the idea of a light, simple car. However this thing is way ugly and vastly under powered by modern standards. I do like the fairly straight forward dash design though.yamaha wrote: In reply to 93EXCivic & z31Maniac: Michiganites also drive like idiots.......Ahhh, yes. The post where idiot drivers exist only in your state, you likely also have the crappiest roads and the most corrupt politicians as well. You are in a unique environment that is significantly worse than everywhere else.
I take exception to that report. I live in Michigan and defend the State and Detroit on here all the time. But the roads suck. I've driven in many of the states that finish way down the list from MI and can assure you the average road is far far worse here.
I also agree with the speed and keeping up with traffic comments. My commute is up and down Southfield freeway, you don't speed in Allen Park or you will get a tick, but North of their 55 limit and if you’re not doing 80mph your holding up traffic. I696 is 80-85 average speed. You can set your cruise in the low 80's and drive clear across the state on 94 or 96 and not get a second look from a cop. Allen Park and Livonia are known for revenue generation, the rest of the state has a sensible outlook on speed.
My Elantra is 800lbs heavier and gets the same mileage, and it is a stick.
Im trying not to pick on anyone in particular but it's annoying and just plain stupid to see people claiming to substantially exceed a car's EPA rating and then turn around and bash another's car EPA rating as if it's a hard number. IT IS STUPID. If you can beat one car's epa rating you can probably beat another one. If someone can get 35mpg out of a 30mpg rating they can probably get 47mpg out of a 40mpg rating and so on and so forth. At least compare apples to apples even if it's just bench racing!
You think the Fiesta is physically a lot bigger than the Mazda2?
I guess i'm the only person who thought was funny. I +1'd it.
I also disagree with the power-to-weight thing. It will probably be fine. I drive a car with extremely similar weight and less power and the only reason it seems slow most of the time is because of the LUDICROUSLY tall gearing. I think if the first 4 gears were geared more normally (as they probably will be in a Mirage) it would be even more acceptable than it already is.
As for fast-moving traffic, so what? That Mirage will be able to top 100mph unless it has a 95mph limiter or something. There is no normal traffic anywhere in any highly populated area that it wont be able to cruise with. And the Mirage will probably get better MPG at 90mph than at least half the cars on the road get at 65.
I think a lot of people who think they have it worse off, or have seen worse than Michigan think that because as two peninsulas nobody really passes through MI on a road trip other than for the Detroit Windsor border crossing. Unless you live in the state or want to see something here, you don't get exposed to the roads. Even then, nobody goes on vacation in the winter when the roads get realllllly torn up.

Just want to put this out there: I was at a Fiesta press meeting recently. They said the take rate for manual-trans Fiestas is around 40%. That doesn't necessarily mean the same is true across brands, but clearly many economy car buyers aren't afraid of a stickshift.
In reply to Alan Cesar: That is refreshing to hear! Hopefully other manufacturers will pay attention.
As for the new Mirage, the weight is shockingly low for a modern car. Honestly, I didn't think current manufacturing strategies even allowed for such a lightweight car, especially outside the boutique sports car niche.
It's hard to get excited about the styling though.
