A friend has offered me a 1971 Saab wagon in a horse trade, similar to the one in the pic. It's rust free, runs and drives, with a 4 speed.
Should I run for the hills?
Does anyone know what the weak points are?
Are parts still available?
Thanks for any info
You absolutely do not want this. No parts are available. Where is it?
Whoa. Nothing like a five year old picture.

Parts are very much available. Hell, I buy most of the maintenance parts for mine from RockAuto. It's a very simple German Ford V4 mated to a simple 4 speed. I used my '72 wagon as a DD for a little over a year, and I came away from that loving it more than I did before. The only thing I've had kill one is rust, but the transmissions do also fail. I've never experienced that firsthand, but it does happen.
My '72, killed by rust (but the drivetrain lives on in my '69 96 DeLuxe):
My current '68. It has been in indoor storage since 1979. I'll get to it one day. :
And you can't forget the sedan cousin, the 96:
They're simple. They're fun. They're efficient for their era. At least go drive it (or post the info here and tempt me to do something stupid again).

Run for the hills!
Just leave the keys and title in it and I'll be down to pick it up soon.

No if I beat you to it. I am closer.

The only thing wrong with it is you don't own it yet.

In reply to 93EXCivic:
You probably also have enough money to put gas in the tank.

Talk you down? Here? On this forum? Don't be silly...
But realistically - what are you trading for it? A decent, driver-quality Saab 95 that's rust-free but needs work seems to be worth in the $3-4K range.
I still regret not buying one we looked at a few years ago. A 4 spd on the column is fun.
And if you do pass, let me know. I'm closer than all these guys and can come get it in <2 hours...
Trading it for a Massey Ferguson farm tractor that needs engine work. I'll never get around to fixing the tractor.

I'll let you know. My friend is a hot rodder. He's talking about butchering it up into a gasser.
I see you have rally pics on your profile, please come help us support rallycross in Florida before the SCCA cans the program

Then you definitely need to save it, even if only to sell it to someone who won't butcher it.
the only thing wrong with it is it doesn't make heaps of power. The V4 used in it was the same V4 originally destined for the Mustang 1 (the styling exercise 2 door mid engine) The Mercury Capri use a V6 version of the V4.
Very recently, while @ the Portland Historics, I came across a V4 with twin side draught DCOEs... I've got a photo somewhere......

Punch him in the face and tell him to find a non-running one.

Haha! You should see the beautiful Morris Minor that he hacked into a gasser. It brought tears to my eyes.

Save it, save it, save it!
Talk you down. Yeah, we'll get right on that.
I'm thining a repaint in the factory tan, a safari rack, and some vintage rally lights
I know where there is a non-running wagon like this in Tampa (near East Bay Raceway) if he wants to cut one up. It was too far gone for me to consider but hacking up this one would be a shame.
Yeah, I'd love to come do some Rallycross. It is on the "list", so to speak. We're just trying to get our Chumpcar done for the Sebring Race on 9/22. If it makes it through that I plan to bring it to the Challenge the next weekend.
When is the next FL Rallycross?
When I was in college we used to go work the SCCA Pro Rallye in Helen, GA as it usually coincided with our Spring Break. THAT was some good fun...
What does the horse you're trading look like?

At one time SAAB made the cross rams and many more speed parts for the V4.
8K rpm ?
The 2.6 Koln V6 can spin up to 7k with not fresh factory Ford parts so a built V4 with the balance shafts going to 8k wouldn't shock me. I'm sure it'd shake paint in the process thou...
