As many autocrossers already know (especially those who run C or E stock), Honda's new CRX has become the car to beat. The 1.5 liter CRX was so successful at this year's SCCA nationals that it has been bumped up two classes, from its original E stock classification into C stock. In fact, th…

This article is not helping my desire for a vintage hot hatch. Something 1600cc or smaller, not like my GTI with its big, low revving 1.8.
I remember driving up to A/T Engineering in the late 80s and buying parts from Serge for my Civic 1200 autocross car.
I think I bought a header, coil, sway bars, and some other odds and ends. They were definitely race oriented parts. You needed to be ready to notch the frame here or there and accept some sketchy mounting brackets for the sway bars, but I think that there were only two places in the country at the time that were selling performance parts for the 1200s, and Serge was a nice guy and pretty helpful.
King Motorsports was the other place that had parts for the 1200, but I couldn't afford the shipping. I think Jackson Racing sold early Civic stuff, but mainly for the CVCCs.

I didn't have that kind of money back then. I took the bumpers off, and there was a body colored metal filler panel that I moved down to become my front spoiler.
I did have a Kamei rear spoiler on my street car at the time, though. Kamei HQ was about 30 minutes from here, so I drove down and bought it directly from them.
Man that brings back some memories! My dad got struts & sway bars for his 79 Accord from them, and I spent hours as a pre-teen flipping thru the AT catalog and dreaming.
And yes, a Kamei spoiler was involved... Because dad is an engineer, laborious testing was involved pre/post installation 🙄.

"mind-boggling 7 seconds"
Oh how far we've come.

I know, right? I let out a little chuckle when I first read that.
I currently own a 1979 civic cvcc with A/T engineering duel weber intake, and 8 valve head with reground cam. I have their old catalogs and wish I could go back in time! The flywheel hp is 115 compared with around 55 it came with, still around 7 second is about right, times have changed.
I remember back in the day competing against a couple of CRXs. I can't remember what class I was stuck in, something modified, which meant that I had 3 or so seconds added to my times. Time wise I could beat the C4 Vettes but not after my handycap time was added. The CRXs however would beat the pants off of everybody, with their snooty driving gloves and shoes and shaved down tires. It didn't help that they also laid out the track on the Kmart parking lot with short straights and tight turns. All while driving around on 3 wheels.

On I-91 near New Haven? I used to shop there too.
The employee parking lot was the epicenter of Klingon Cruiser styling.
