I have an offer of free wheels for the 2002 Mazda Protege. The wheels are leftovers from when a friend autocrossed his 1989 mazda Mx6.
It is a ways to go to try and fit them, so I thought someone migh know if it is even chance. All I know is that they are both 4 lug and FWD.
The rims in question are 7.5 inches wide and I want to put 205 55 15s on them.

You sure on that? Tirerack says the 89 MX-6 was 5x114.3

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they are different bolt patterns. I would guess the mx6 uses 4x114.3mm and I know the protege is 4x100mm
yeah, the 1gen mx6 (actually all of the mx6's and 626's AND probes) were 5 x 4.5" or 5 x 114.3

Thanks. Looks like I can skip the drive. The current owner is sure they are four lugs, but I do know the protege is 100 mm bolt pattern.
Protégés are either 4x100 or 5x114.3 depending on options, IIRC.
This source says that yes, they will fit. Check for yourself. Seems that Protoges went to 5x114.3 just for the '02 and '03 model year.

What concerns me is that you say that your MX6 is a 4 bolt hub. Are you sure? Can you check in your driveway?
It also says that the center bore on the Protoge rims will be larger than the hole on the MX6 meaning that a hub centric ring adapter will be helpful in keeping the Protoge rims centered no the MX6 hub.

You have it mixed up I think. He has the protege and would be getting the wheels from a MX6.
While some Protege's were 5x114.3 in 2002 (Protege 5, Protege ES) others in the lineup stuck with 4x100 (LX, DX)
