Out here in the mountains, a nice V8 Quattro should be worth that sort of loot. I occasionally see them for sale (it's one of the very few Audis I'd consider) for $3k-$5k.

If it needs (almost) anything, you're stuffed because of parts availability issues but if it is as good as you said I might be interested...

I saw a nice black one at the Mitty a few years ago that was for sale.

They are weird beasts, that's for sure. $3k isn't unreasonable if it is a very nice example, but you are absolutely right, it will probably only sell to someone that is specifically looking for a V8Q.

IIRC, these have two timing belts...one on each side of the engine (as in one up front, one in back)

And then there's the UFO brakes...

Didn't even know this car existed. Is the V8 on these reliable?

Did they even sell the one with 4.2 and a 6 speed in the US? Seems like something Audi would typically deny american buyers, lol.

Usually the Audis I want are never sold here seems like an interesting car.

I had a v8 for a while. Loved it .a very point and shoot car. Didn't slide sideways even in snow. 25 mpg at 70. I sold it to someone on here it had a slightly crunched rear passenger side rear quarter. I have no clue where it is now. A friend had a v8 5spd I believe 88 or 89.

Sorry for rambling but coffee had not been consumed. 2500 to 3000 is a good price I would buy it but no cash flow right now.

A V8 5 speed is very desirable. Auto not so much. If you can get 3, that sounds like a good deal. Old Audis have a terrible resale history in spite of being great cars. Last year I bought a 20V sedan that needed a muffler for 1800 and it had 85000 miles. This year an 87 5000Q with 57K miles for a grand. Hope I don't find any more deals, running out of space.

I like alot of the late 80s/early 90s Audi cars, including hte V8.

Are they are scary as late 90s/early 00s to keep running? I have a thing for Italians and I'm terrified of Audis.

What the 5-cylinder cars (and to an extent, the earlier V8s) make up for in mechanical simplicity is offset by downright absurd electronics and piss poor component quality. Most of the wiring in the car is run through the driver's door hinge for some reason, where they all seem to crack and break. Both my CQ 20v and 200q turbo left me stranded because the PLASTIC distributor gear sheared off...of course you can't buy just a gear and the new disty is $300 (albeit with a metal gear). Otherwise I just got used to windows, wipers, etc randomly working or not working. Timing belts are a PITA because the entire front end of the car has to come off.

They are heavy, heavy cars, even the 90's and coupes. Drivetrain is extremely robust and they can make a lot of power but they are not really known for excellent handling or being a whole lot of fun to drive. The engine is waaaaay far forward, and it is a heavy engine, so they are kind of pigs to drive. My 200q turbo was FAST but wasn't nearly as fun to drive as it should have been. And working on it was always a nightmare.

I still cringe at the thought of the V8Q's bizarre "one-up-front, one-in-back" timing belt setup...and that's something you'll have to deal with at some point regardless of PO maintenance.

If you are ever wondering how a given Audi stacks up, take a VW of the same era and imagine 4x the complexity and 2x the build quality with the same component quality. So, Audis are better built than VWs but with the same crappy components, and a lot more of them.

I look at those cars as donors. the limited slip rear diff is useful for folks with Audi 5-speeds that want a limited slip (like Porsche and other Audi folks)

The engine uses a 5-cylinder bellhousing pattern making for an interesting swap candidate in a smaller chassis, like an earlier 4000 or a 924 (which can swallow a 928 motor BTW)

The 5-speed is a stronger unit, the brakes are larger, etc.

The key with Audi is to follow the maintenance guidelines and routines to the letter and you'll be a happier owner. Just keep in mind that major components like to be serviced as a unit. So expect that timing belts and other engine maintenance requires pulling the engine.

On the flip side, ever work on an Italian V8 powered car? Yeah at least the Germans used logic in their builds, the Italians used fairy dust, pasta and lots and lots of wine to build their cars.

I shopped them a while back. The front UFO brakes are a weak point, but lots of owners swapped them to other units, including a Porsche 928 setup IIRC. If this has been done, it is worth more.
