This is a '97 E-Superduty
The details:
1 week ago during a two hour drive:
-Pulling a loaded trailer, had one light miss going up hill while cruising. Felt like the torque converter unlocked then locked quickly.
-Two successive hard misses while accelerating up an on-ramp 45 minutes later
-Two successive lighter misses while cruising (~3500 RPM) 10 minutes later
-Drove fine otherwise. No loss of power, no weird smoke
This morning (hadn't driven it in a week):
-Started up easy no problem
-Placed into gear idled a few feet, then stalled. Restarted easily
-Putted around the parking lot, had one more stall and a couple stumbles.
-Stopped truck and restarted 10 minutes later, no problem.
-Putted around the parking lot, parked it, stalled, and hasn't restarted since.
-Cranks without issue, no sputters, no smoke, just cranks and never starts
What I've checked:
-I checked the oil and it was low, just enough to register only about 1/4" in the dipstick, oil has been filled to proper level.
-The only mod is an E-fuel Conversion (~2500 miles on it), 65 PSI confirmed at the rails
-Unplugged ICP Sensor - No Change
-Idle controller registers 105-110 RPM while cranking
-WTS light turns on, then off as it should
-No check engine lights during any of this (it does work)
-Gauges always registered normal
Is this simply a case of needing to pump of the high pressure oil lines? Did they run dry, maybe?
Can the CPS send a bad signal, even though it registers properly on the idle controller?
Thanks guys!
CPS. My old truck did the same thing. Would shut off and restart at highway speeds. About a 10 minute job. I have two spares that I have no use for actually as long as they are the same as the ones used on a '99 7.3. $35 for both shipped
Simple question: Does the tach move while cranking?
If no: CmPS is bad.
If yes: Need to dig deeper with a scan tool.

I don't have a dash tach. However, I do have a tachometer on the idle control box that registers between 105-110 rpm while cranking.
Different. Ford used the CmPS to run or verify the dash tach.
Gut internet worth feeling, the CmPS is bad.

That would be awesome. I'll go ahead and swap it out. It's a PITA on this truck as it's a van chassis with a seconary AC compressor right in the way. I'll take a poke at it this evening.
Thanks!
CPS. Very, very easy fix to swap a new one in. Did it in the driveway in my '99 F250 SD in a few minutes. Buy CGlock's and put one in the glovebox as a spare.

Swapped the CPS for a new one. No help. Not even a sputter.
I also confirmed that the HPOP reservoir is full of oil (as it should be).
IDM is my next bet. Had one of those die on me.
Have done MANY more CPS's then IDM's and ive been working on ford fleets for the past 6 years.
Just be glad you don't have a 6.0

Oh how I know. A co-worker has a 6.0 and I've seen what he's gone through. However, his 6.0 is running a lot better than my 7.3 :) .
Any quick checks to confirm yay or nay on an IDM failure?
My IDM died from water intrusion. Just took it off and it weighed A LOT. Then I shook it. Ocean inside.
