We have both the donor car and the MR2 torn down so we need to make a decision on clutch and trans. Remember this is a challenge build so the budget has a big effect. The MR2 is a 2.2L NA so I believe that is the s54 transmission and the V6 donor is a 1999 Solara, which I believe is an e153.

The MR2 trans came with a brand new clutch and pressure plate, so it would nice to be able to use that. Originally I thought that clutch would bolt to the V6 flywheel but looks like the diameter is off about 3/16". We had an original plan was to use the MR2 trans for the NA swap as it makes, shifter, axles, and mounting easier. This could still be the plan if we could use the V6 flywheel and pressure plate and the S54 clutch disk. Not sure why this would not work, but I am no clutch expert. It looks like the clutch would be about .1" smaller in diameter than the pressure plate but again not sure that would make any real difference. I did not check the pilot bushing difference so I would need to check that.

The alternative I see is using the e153 trans, but this means modifying the shifter to come out the opposite side of the transmission and changing either the outer axles stubs or the rear bearings and hub assemblies. So this is the more expensive route and we are trying to stay in the Gastropub rules this year which does not allow recoup so a hard $2000 budget. We plan on saving the e153 transmission fo next year as we would like to supercharge the car and bring it back for 2020.

So am I off base, got any better ideas, those that have gone before we are looking for your wisdom.

On a challenge budget, reuse the V6 pressure plate with the new S54 clutch disc.

In addition to drilling the case to flip the gear selector, the Solara E351 requires you to come up with MR2 Turbo axles, machine the intermediate shaft so that the carrier bearing will bolt to the V6 block in the right place, and replace the hubs and bearings.

It would be ideal for a long term street car, but I don't think you'll break the S54 right away.

I would put a really stiff rear transmission mount on to help control engine movement since the passenger MR2 NA axle doesn't have an intermediate shaft supporting it.   Otherwise, torquey V6 and drag launches could get the axle geometry off enough that Bad Things happen.
