I'm a fan of mechanically solid cars with dinged-up exteriors with okay interiors for DD duty, and this thing is seriously piquing my interest.

Not much to look at, but it might have it where it counts, kid. Looks like it shares a LOT cross-platform, with room for tasteful upgrades where needed.
Looks good to me. Gearing is really short so you'll be spinning 4k on the highway at 70-75 mph. Also, I had one and average gas mpg was closer to 25 than upper 20s in the ad. Lastly, i'd yank those front belts and put in some regular manual ones.

I had a white one just like that for 11 years. It had 160k on it when I bought it and 280k when I sold it. Still had the original clutch in it. I only sold it because the a/c quit working and mt dad gave me a 1994 S10 Blazer with working a/c. I wish I still had the Protege.
There's a rally cross prepped one for sale in Oklahoma in the classifieds section. BP motors are boost friendly.
Seems like a solid deal, these are cockroaches.
We had no problems doing 30mpg+ on the highway with the Escort GT, same car. Gearing is more like 3200ish at 70mph.

Saw that, if it's DD capable it might be worth considering.
For a while there, that was the hot car in Showroom Stock C racing. The LX is the one to get, too.
I've always wanted one of these, never could find one when I was in the market. Looks good, probably could talk him down to a grand. I say go for it...I've heard nothing but good about these cars over the years.

I believe it comes with all seasons. Bonus.

depending on the condition of the rally tires, you'd be able to sell them and the rally suspension for almost half of his asking price to someone involved in rally or rallycross (If you choose not to rallycross of course)
I want that rally one. Not to far from me either (I live in OKC)
I believe that time is of the essence in getting the rallycross prepped one as the owner is moving overseas in the near future.
I had this exact car, color, and trim as a first car. Worked great for me.
After this, crashed my Protege, I had an Escort Wagon which was virtually the same thing as well.
the lack of airbags is why I wish my dad would replace his 91 1.8 as his daily driver. He drives 45 miles each way, surrounded by SUVS in Atlanta. The transmission went out, but it was an auto so no issue for you there. Its a reliable car, but not exactly a safe car.
I had a '94 DX( 1.8L SOHC ) that took a beating for many years. A good friend of mine had an LX at the time, as well. I don't think mine had ABS or air bags, but it took every thing I could throw at it. The LX avg'd around 25-27 on the highway at 70-75. IIRC, the chassis is the same between the DX and LX but the LX has the "better" engine. Clubprotege.com used to be the goto site for info( this was my pre-GRM days... ). I would def own an LX if given the chance.
I say drive it, and see how it feels to you.

I've bought nicer, lower mileage versions at his asking price, I would think at most $700 in spite of the work that's been done to it.
As mentioned above, the clutch lasts 'forever', the rear main seal doesn't.

Funny, that's just one reason I prefer driving these rather than the new stuff. I understand where you're coming from tho; just have different preferences. Regardless, these are stout small cars, the chassis was designed with rally use in mind

There really isn't anything wrong with these. A stocker was and still is a fine daily driver, and they can be hotrodded and still keep at least some reliability. I will miss my awd 320whp 323GTR drivetrain swapped car that the shiny happy person totalled for me, forever. I really should get my rallycar up and running again...
