Hey all. A friend has a '00 Infinit I30, no issues prior to taking it in for some maintenance, wherein the garage told him it needed a new "oil sensor" - sesor replaced, dash light came on, garage replaced sensor again, changed oil again, problem remained. They recommended he take it to Infinity dealer, and he did so.

Initial check was that oil pressure was "a tad low" at idle, fine at engine speed.

A week or two gone by, checked again, oil pressure is low. Not sure how the dealer surmised oil pressure - I guess a gauge at the sensor site...

134k miles, otherwise runs great.

Are these things known to eat oil pumps? Doesn't seem like a lot of miles on the car for that kind of failure.

Suggestions?

There's a Nissan V6 that has a gasket in the timing cover that likes to blow out. Not available separately.

I think those are newer than 2000, though.

Yeah, quick google search shows that there's not a lot of info on oil pump failures for them. Something seems off, there. Possible I guess, but doesn't seem right to me.

VQ30, as I recall, can have oiling issues if the timing chain tensioner fails. Ask around on Maxima.org in the 5th gen section, there's a lot of good information there about the VQ30DE-K that's in the I30. I know, I put a lot of it there a decade ago, haha...

Did some more huntin' - it's on the VQ engines and generally causes a camshaft position fault before you see the oil light coming on at idle.

The first thing you check when diag'ing a cam position fault is "Is there oil in the engine?" #2 is "Is there oil pressure in the engine?"
