Looks like the CR-1 is maybe $25 more expensive than Kevin's NS2R, and maybe more aggressive.
That's $20 each cheaper than the Rival S 1.5, though with shipping (I can pick up Rivals from TR directly for a $10 / tire discount) they will actually be a little more expensive in total.
The RT660 comes in at about $122 a tire through TR
Thanks to both of you for the suggestions!

So in summary I have 4 decent options, ranked by price for tires in hand:
Nankang CR-1 @ $167.50 ea
BFG Rival S 1.5 @ $160.00 ea
Nankang NS2R @ 143.50 ea
Falken RT660 @ 123.00 ea

Seems like the answer is obvious since the cheapest tire is also the fastest or maybe a very close second of the bunch.

Since our cars are very similar, a big eye opener for me was running the 245/40R15 Rivals. I had also run the 225s and was unimpressed. The 245s had ridiculous grip. The other thing I learned is that the Rivals like to be hot, so I learned to pretty much go full send from run #1. It resulted in some messy runs with a bunch of cones for the first run or two, but then they came up to temp and I had monster grip.

RT660 for for autocross and some nice weather moderate-distance commuting?
In reply to NickD :
245s would be nice but I'm afraid they would require more wheel arch surgery than I want. What did you have to do to fit them?
I found that the 225s didn't like too much heat and my last run or two were usually pretty greasy.
Rt660 are supposed to be fairly sticky, by not wear as well as the rs4.
