When did the ads become almost nothing but CL cars, not even owned by anyone here? Sure, the left coast/deep south has some decent looking stuff, but if I'm looking for something I can do a CL search. I'm looking for a deal on parts/cars and maybe helping a member from here out with a clean out of some goodies....you know, one mans garbage is another mans treasure sort of thing. If I want to look at CL crap, I'll look at CL. rant off.

One reason I stopped posting my CL finds in there, I saw I was burying board members trying to move their warez, plus the CL find of the day thread does an adequate job of covering CL related finds and it lives over here...

You can look at the forum two ways- one is for the people that you both are correctly to be concerned about- the members here who are trying to sell their stuff to other board members.

But I know I've used it a few times to entice other posters in getting involved with the Challenge based on some advertisments I've seen on e-bay.

And I think it's kind of both- a way to nudge some ideas to other posters, and a way for posters to exchange cars and parts with each other.

QFT. I've given as much stuff away here as I've actually "sold". I usually put "bonuses" in with the stuff I sell, too.

When I post CL stuff to the $200x classifieds, I try to keep it 1) cheap 2) very rare and 3) a crazy good deal.

I'd prefer a Craigslist thread for interesting cars and back to the old style classifieds for GRM people with stuff for sale at any price.

Not as tempting as the other Celica, but MY GOD... I think I've looked at every car on CL within an hour's drive of here within my $1k budget cap this week. While I'm hardly delusional about how good a New England car will be for a thousand dollars, it's a barren wasteland of rusty Tauri, smokey 305s, riced and decrepit Civics, slipping automatics, droning GM V6s, and I missed out on a clean '91 Lexus(the big 1UZ sedan, model designation escapes me) by two hours; they were moving out of state and scrapped it.

^THAT Celica makes me want an exponentially increased budget, by crook or by hook.

LS400.

And yeahhhh.... i kick myself when i think i could have had that or one of the other two "ST205s" that have been for sale in the last few months instead of my Miata.

D'OH!

That one was done right, too, fwiw.

There was a time when I posted some "great" craigslist deals in the $20XX Classifieds. I stopped doing it when some people started posting them way, way too often.

My self imposed rule: If it's mine, or a friend, and I think it's a great deal, I'll post it up here. Otherwise, if it's such a good deal that it can't be passed up...I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT MYSELF. If I didn't buy it myself, then it's probably not that great of a deal and I shouldn't waste other people's time on it either. We all have access to craigslist, and there are now lots of pretty good search tools out there (didn't used to be!) to do nationwide searches with craigslist so there's no point in reposting craigslist ads.

Why not make a sticky for a craigslist thread in the For Sale section that stays at the top and doesn't interfere with regular posts? You know pin the thread to the top?

That never works too well in my experience. Things get buried in the thread and makes them hard to find.

If nobody posted craigslist finds in the classifieds section it would probably have ads that were a few months old on the first page.

Well, there isn't a ton of reader ads in there in the first place. This section would be stagnant without the craigslist stuff.

I enjoy the ads, but my opinion is free and worth about the same amount.

I like them. Sure, we all have access to craigslist, but I'm not constantly searching. I see it more as "collective searching power" I guess. I also like the variety.....I have no idea how you guys find some of the things that pop up on here.

I rather enjoy the CL links too, I'm there often as-is. In fact, I was recently asked to help with a new Lemons team, and my life has been subsequently destroyed by a sudden need to find and hoard bargain basement Chevy small blocks.

(No one told me they were that cheap. Seriously? Wow.)

IIRC, someone here bought a car I found on CL. It was an FB with a nice cage but no motor for cheap. I had no use for it but knew it would appeal to this group, so I posted it. Lo and behold, someone snagged it.

That said, when I do find something on CL that I think would be of interest, I take the time to copy and paste the ad text and photos here, so folks can see the ad without having to click the CL link. I also label the post the with car, price and location. That way, GRMers can skip right over it if not interested.
