Friend acquired one that it was assumed that it was a rod bearing. I heard it and yes it could be but I was not 100 percent convinced and advises him to take the pan off and inspect things first. Well today he did and he called me saying that the timing chain was very loose. i advised him to inspect the rod bearings extra carefully as it very well could be the timing chain.

1. Question I have is timing chains an issue on these?  Or are they known for rod bearings?

2. If it is a chain do these have tensioners like other modern motors?  If yes could this just be a tensioner that has gone bad like the BMW v8s and this is just a timing chain death rattle and the motor could really be ok?

IIRC they have been having oil pump issues.

Edit:  And valvetrain issues, breaking rockers.

Humm. Is there an upgraded part for the oil pump?

Is there a timing chain tentioner for these or are these like SBC timing chains?

Timing chain rattle and rod knock are quite different.

This would have been my guess, these engines are notorious.

My mail carrier has a 3.6L Wrangler with timing chain issues.  Not saying it is common, but certainly a possibility.
