Nice find and well bought.
Thanks guys! We're actually heading out to go look at a few first gen donor cars now. With any luck, we'll end up with a good rebuildable 12A or 13B.
This car sat on Craiglist for $1500 with no engine ($2500 if you wanted an engine with it) for about a week. The guy said he had over 30 calls in the first 3 days about it. I think I saw the ad about 1 day into it being listed... called and immediately came up with $500 for him to hold the car sight unseen for a few days til I could come get it... long story short, my advice with any of this is strike while it's hot and be ready to roll with the money. You may lose out sometimes (I got a completely rotted first gen for $350 once that was really only worth about $100 in parts or scrap) but other times you get something like this.
Stay tuned... hopefully some good updates on it soon. The goal is have it done by July 1 for a few local events to shake everything down prior to making the trip to FL!
Remember my RX-3?

That sucks man - but the good thing is, its just a car and you survived. Also, silver lining is the parts from the junkyard may help somebody finish their project and put another one on the road.
Small update - both RX7s looked good, so we bought both for a STEAL... haven't had a chance to run either engine, but for what we paid, we'll either get to use them on this project or sell/use on another project.
One is a 1985 GSL 12A car that was "good" but based on the double hose clamps on the rad and the mileage, I'm sure if it runs, its definitely got coolant ring failure. We'll tear it down soon to find out.
The other is a totaled GSL-SE... BUT a running engine.. it looks good, owner said it was running when he got rear-ended last summer and the motor still spins freely. Again, we haven't tried firing either one, but obviously that story pans out since the car didn't get totalled sitting in his backyard, lol..
A RX3GSL-SE, sounds kinda fun... the 12A bridge plan would probably produce more WHP, but the 13BEFI will have more torque and ultimately be cheaper since we wont have to rebuild it...
Oh, paid $250 for BOTH cars... :)
I sold it to a guy in Philly that was planning on piecing it back together with parts from his SP, or using the good pieces of mine to put on his SP. There were still plenty of good parts left on the car after the accident.
Not mine, older listing and seems high $$$:

Rx3 Rolling Chassis - $2500 (Danielsville, GA 30633)
For Sale - Rolling Chassis with most components to complete (less drive line and interior) Former SCCA ITA race car (has roll cage). Solid chassis. Price firm. No comunication via e-mail. E-mail and text ignored. If interested in inspecting please call wallace and leave message. Wallace 706-540-6-zero-8-four ( R100, Rx2, Rx3, Rx4, Rx7, Rx8, Toyata, Rotary, 12A, 13B )
Thaty RX3 that Wallace is listing is the one I owned a couple years agao. I sold it to a friend of mine so I could by my RX2 ITA car. He traded it to Kubota aqlley for a running ITS RX7. It is a good solid chassis.
Small update but the car's bodywork is 75% complete, expect it to be done and jammed out within two weeks. I really want this thing in one solid color again!! After the paint, its interior and engine time... we're still sitting pretty on the budget with about $800 left to spend :)
So it's time for an update again... it's sad but I don't think the RX3 will be making its debut at this year's challenge. My father in law passed away suddenly in June and I was hit with my own medical set backs earlier this month. All of which slowed progress way down. Still wrapping up the paint job and the engine isn't even built yet. This may have to be a $2013 Challenge car!
I've been taken quite a few photos that I'll add up on our website shortly.
Lol - The car is painted but I havent color sanded it yet so once that's done, I promise new pictures and a full update on our website.
Its nice to have it one color again. A quick low down is:
This is the first entire car I've done a paint job on. I've painted areas/panels and misc parts before but never an entire car and believe me, I'm learning a ton. Such as the compressor is adequate but the extension cord is not, lol. I also learned that welding 30 year old japanese steel is not simple.
I'm slowly getting the build thread caught up on our website (www.twitchyracing.com) but for those of you waiting on a good update.. here is how the car is sitting right now.
The panels need to aligned, bumpers, hood etc are just all resting in place. The hood, roof and deck lid are going to be carbon vinyl wrapped thus the more "matte" finish.
Hope to have the body all together by Halloween so we can drop the engine in before Thanksgiving. Stay tuned!
We're still plugging away on this car... should be no trouble for the $2013 challenge, lol!
For those following the build, the thread on http://www.twitchyracing.com/category/grmrx3/ is up to date minus the engine pics. Should have those updates after the holidays!!!
Little before and after on the engine bay, just because I love the contrast. This car has completely changed.
Yea, was moving on a good pace and then things happened and it slowed down. We finish out our autox season on top in the rx8 and miata though so it wasn't for nothing. I'm really eager though to see what a GRM challenge event is like though. Looks like next year for sure...
Quick ?? for those who have done the GRM challenge before. I'm working on updating the build sheet with the costs... what's the best way to determine the cost of the filler used during the body work? I buy in bulk (a gallon at a time) for other projects. I know roughly how much filler was used on the RX3.. should I just take the cost of the gallon and divide by the amount of ounces the RX3 took? Its roughly 70oz of filler (little more than half a gallon).. so about $24 in filler ($48 per gallon of the Evercoat product I use).
Thanks - once I figure this out, I'll post a full cost to date build sheet on our website. Right now though its falling below $1300 for everything minus the engine/mechanics thus far. I think we'll meet the $2013 budget easily...
You'll need to log in to post.
