Hi guys - I'm looking for a new DD and have zeroed in on finding a leftover or lightly used FiST.  I've located one about an hour away with only 19K miles and pretty loaded up (Recaros, sunroof, Molten Orange paint, etc).  The car looks fairly clean (of course, so do all cars in low-res CL pics), and the fact that it comes with the Mountune 215hp upgrade doesn't hurt.  smiley

I've been in research mode and it appears there's a known issue with the cylinder head casting of 2014-2015 FiSTs, as well as Escapes and other models using the 1.6L EcoBoost.  Apparently something got monkeyed up with the coolant passages and, as a result, there can be "hot spots" in the cylinder head, leading to coolant evaporation, eventual low coolant levels, overheating, and (if you completely ignore ALL the warning signs) engine death.  Ford redid the cylinder head in the 2016+ models, which apparently solved the issue.

The problem was apparently bad enough to garner NHTSA's attention, and Ford has issued Safety Recall 17S09 to "resolve".  I'm putting quotes around that, as it doesn't really fix the issue - their solution is to add a low coolant level sensor to a new coolant tank, and have that activate the temp idiot light on the dash when coolant levels are low.  Seems like a Band-Aid to me, and depending on how fast these early heads boil off coolant, means a few more bucks to add to the maintenance regime.

The car I'm looking at seems to be well-cared for and has about one year left on the factory powertrain warranty.  The recall to add the coolant level sensor has not been done yet, but would be done soon after if I pick it up.  Assuming the rest of the car checks out, is this something I should actually worry about, or has the InterWebz blown this out of proportion?  If it was a CPO car with a healthy warranty remaining, I wouldn't worry that much...just hate to get a short bit past warranty and have to come out of pocket for a motor.

Thoughts/feedback from any 2014-2015 owners would be greatly appreciated...I'm going to look at the car tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

The power train warrenty would cover it.

You could do some checking with Ford.com

In reply to iceracer :

Thanks iceracer.  I'm going to check with Ford and/or my local dealer on Monday.  The car does have one year left on the original powertrain warranty....my concern is more focused after that year is up.  I get a little twitchy when coolant levels start going down, so just not sure if it's worth getting a fairly good deal on a 2014 and rolling the dice, or holding out for a 2016+ with the revised head.

I have a 2014 with 25,000 miles on the clock, 20,000 of those were track or autocross.  (I'm only slightly kidding)  I have not done the recall yet, it is actually scheduled for tomorrow.  I have never had the temp needle move a hair from where it should be, regardless of ambient temperatures or how hard I am wailing on the car.  My friends with Fists, even up to Mountune 230+ mods, have never reported an issue either.  On all of the FiST forums that I am on, it does not seem to be a topic of discussion.  I would say, buy the car and enjoy the snot out of it.

this should be the case, but FYI this is the limited ford performance warranty info on the mountune stuff.
