2015 Ford Mustang weight leaked; GT adds less than 100 pounds

Manual versions of the 2015 GT model will see gains of 86 pounds (3,704 pounds total); automatics will see an addition of 52 pounds (3,727). Convertible versions of the GT will add 90 pounds (3,825) for the manual and 60 pounds (3,852) for the automatic.

V6 variants will also see weight gains in the form of 25 pounds (3,526 pounds) for the manual-equipped hardtop, and just 6 pounds (3,529) for the automatic version. Convertible V6’s will gain 14 pounds (3,644 pounds) in manual form and a spritely 2 pounds (3,654) in automatic guise.

A new addition for 2015, Ford’s four-cylinder turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engines will also be added to the Mustang lineup. Manual versions of the EcoBoost will come in just a hair below the V6 variants at 3,517 pounds for the Fastback versions and 3,642 for the convertible. For those who check the automatic option box, weights will be 3,512 pounds for the Fastback and 3,661 for the convertible respectively.

I feel it would be unfair to comment on the weight of these new models because I presently own a GTO :/

My GS430 weighs almost the exact same as the 2015 GT. (3,707 lbs versus the GT's 3,704 lbs.) It is down about 130 horsepower though.

Yep, not much gain, but a couple years ago they were saying the 2015 would be lighter and smaller than the current Mustang. Guess that didn't happen, but it would have been nice if it had.

I'm a little disappointed that it isn't 200-300 lbs lighter, like early reports stated, but I'm glad it's not 200 lbs heavier like they reported last week. My '65 is almost a full 1k lbs lighter, so I think I'll stick with that for a while.

Who said that? The talking heads not Ford.

I don't like the weight creep... but I find the Ecoboost manual fastback coming in just a hair over 3500lbs' to be really quite solid in this day for what it is.

Wonder if hood/hatch are steel? I'd think a couple aftermarket panels or some lightweight wheels/battery would have this well under 3500lbs.

As for gaining weight period... yeah, I'm dissapointed. Especially with the advancement of lighter weights across their spectrum. Fiesta ST is surprisingly light, new aluminum F150 shed 700lbs., and they just touted around that lightweight concept Fusion. I know it gained IRS, but it's not like it gained any size (yes it's technically wider, but a hair shorter and same wheelbase).

Like others I was expecting lighter as well. Not necessarily a deal killer but c'mon. My '05 GT is about 3450. WTF happened.

I don't care how amazing your car is, at some point, weight DOES become an issue with handling (ok, sure, GTR blah blah blah).

What exactly is causing the weight gain is what I want to know? It is a 2 door musclecar that carries two people (ok, I "guess" it can technically carry 4). Why does it need to be so large?

Geez, 3700 lbs? That is ridiculous. Good thing MOST Mustang guys dont seem to care about weight, and just look at the horsepower numbers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the generation following this one gets an aluminium body like the new F150. If it doesn't loose after that you'll have a real reason to complain!

I'm looking forward to test driving the ecoboost/manual model.

The hood should be aluminum already. I know the one on my '06 GT was (found out when I cut into it). the fenders are steel, but they really are light.

Most of the weight is in the chassis to make it ultra stiff and still provide crash protection in the new testing.

It may seem porky pig, but even the 3 and 4 series BMWs weigh this much for slightly smaller cars with a lot less power (I'd say the 4 series and the Mustang are close enough to being competitors now, due to similar layouts and missions these days). With Civics being over 3000 lbs, and 5 series BMWs over 4000 lbs, I'd say a 3600-3700 lb Mustang is about right sized.

The turbo car is 200 lbs lighter than the GT. I would assume it's pretty much all off the front. If they build the car to handle more tire, it might be an interesting autocross car.

Didn't the last 2015 Mustang thread indeed say that the weight would be less? I knew that it wouldn't be, but I believe it was stated. Too bad with the bloat. Kinda the modern thing though. I have a loaded E34 that weights in at 3250-ish pounds, and I'm amazed how solid these cars were back in the 90's. I would've guessed closer to 4000 by the sound and feel of the doors closing! While there is added equipment in modern cars, it's a real shame about the fat-a$$ obesity issues we're having in 'murica these days....
